As I write these notes I have just returned from sunny Wales to recharge my batteries and have a break in a different environment, however the phone was still in non-stop constant use and I was fully utilising internet access with endless emails and football club activity.
This week it was confirmed that our opposition in the Southern Premier Division South will be exactly as it was at the start of last season, no restructuring, so a number of familiar opponents to face when the season does get underway in August. In the meantime, our youngsters have continued to bring silverware to The Meadow, on the back of the Academy side winning their league with ten straight wins, our Saturday Youth team triumphed on Thursday night in the West Herts League Charity Cup Final at Hemel Hempstead Town, beating Hemel Rovers 6-0. Congratulations to them, there is so much young talent in the area, it is becoming quite a responsibility to make sure we have the foundations of a successful club for these players to be a part of.
Following on from their Southern Division success, our Academy side are playing at Rushall Olympic against the Northern winners, Runcorn Linnets in the Champion of Champions Finals on Monday 24th May and the second game at the same venue on Wednesday 9th June against Mickleover, the Midland winners, to find out who the outright ESPFA champions will be this season. We wish Gary and the boys all the very best of luck.
I have also been in discussions this week about adding another team under the Chesham United banner for the forthcoming season with the introduction of a Deaf Football side to compete in the 11-a-side EDF League alongside the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion DFC, Carlisle DFC, Fulham DFC, Welling DFC and Bristol City DFC. These conversations are set to continue over the next few weeks, and I am very hopeful of making this happen.
I can also assure you that the eagerly awaited season tickets renewals will be out next week! We have been busy working on a new online ticketing system that will make purchases considerably easier, both for you as the buyer, and also for us as a club to administrate. The system will also be in place for our Sellebrity Charity match due to take place in September – be on the lookout for more details very shortly.
Away from the pitch, we are very excited that The Chess Suite will be open with tables of 6 permitted and table service in place going forward. The weather looks to be pretty horrible over the weekend, so what better way to spend your Saturday afternoon than back in the clubhouse of your local football club sharing a drink or two with old friends. The club will be open from noon on Saturday and Sunday, I do hope to see some of you then.
Painters have been busy around the club this week and once this awful weather abates we are looking for a Saturday work party to clear all the weeds and long grass from our terracing after they have been sprayed a week prior with weed and grass killer treatment, so please look out for the announcement and if you can spare us a few hours to get the terraces back into tip top condition for the start of pre-season games which commence in early July.
Elsewhere, we don’t always like to sing our own praises, so this week we opened up the club for a local choir to practice and they will now be using our facilities on a weekly basis on Wednesday afternoons, and they would be delighted to welcome any new members who would like to join them – I have heard a few of our supporters singing on the terraces so this might not be for everyone, but I am sure there is the odd Aled Jones sound-a-like out there who might enjoy joining the choir that will be performing at our Christmas Panto in December.
