Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce

Chesham moved back to third in the table with a hard-earned but deserved win at Merthyr. Chesham built up a winning lead by the hour mark, and although the home team forced some fine saves out of Ben Goode they rarely looked like retrieving the deficit. Jeanmal Prosper returned to the starting eleven in midfield, replacing Mark Kirby. Romario Hart and Karl Oliyide came in for Eoin Casey, who was on the bench, and Jefferson Louis who has left the club along with Ryan Blake. Ronny Mfinda made his first appearance of the season as a second-half substitute.

On a warm afternoon on Merthyr’s artificial surface, the home side were the first to show with Ian Traylor trying his luck from long range bur Ben Goode saved comfortably. In the eighth minute Chesham put together a neat move down the right which ended with Dave Pearce crossing and Dernell Wynter hooking the ball just wide of the near post. However Merthyr took the lead on 15 minutes, when Lee Lucas sent Ian Traylor clear to shot past Ben Goode as Chesham appealed in vain for offside. However the lead was to last only eight minutes, as the ball ran loose in the home penalty area and came to Dave Pearce on the right, and he curled a superb shot into the far top corner of the net with home keeper Alexander Harris stranded. Chesham were starting to take control of the game, although Merthyr again came close when a Lee Lucas shot took a slight deflection and clipped the top of the bar. Chesham had two more efforts on goal before half-time, firstly when Jeanmal Prosper stabbed a Dave Pearce corner over the bar, then another Pearce corner found Steve Brown who could only glance a near-post header across goal.

In the opening minute of the second half Karl Oliyide found Dernell Wynter whose first-time shot from the edge of the area beat Harris but just cleared the bar. However two minutes later a great through ball from Dave Pearce set up Romario Hart, who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and into the roof of the net to give Chesham the lead. Shortly afterwards Karl Oliyide turned the ball towards goal after Dernell Wynter got round the back of the defence, but Harris was able to save comfortably.  Merthyr made a triple substitution just before the hour which smacked of desperation, and Chesham wrapped up the points with a third goal on the hour. Dernell Wynter ran down the left and found Dave Pearce, who stroked the ball neatly past Harris and into the corner of the net at the near post. Chesham eased off and Merthyr came back into the game in the final quarter. Ian Traylor tried to catch out Ben Goode with a near-post shot but the keeper dived to turn the ball round the post, then Goode tipped another Traylor effort over the bar. Chesham continued to threaten on the break and Sandro Costa nearly sent Ronny Mfinda clear but the ball was just cleared away at the last second, then another Chesham break saw Costa shoot across goal after cutting in from the left. Six minutes from time Lee Lucas ran at the Chesham defence and unleashed a drive that beat Ben Goode but came back off the bar, but after that Chesham were able to see out time in relative comfort.
