Chesham United Man of the Match: Adam Martin

Chesham managed their first league win of the season and regained touch with the other teams in the league.  This was far from a vintage performance – in fact it was a fairly poor game in difficult conditions – but Chesham got their noses in front in the first half and kept their first clean sheet of the season. Kieran Murphy returned in the centre of defence after missing eight matches, playing alongside Lewis Rolfe in the centre of defence with Matt Bevans at right back.  Dave Pearce dropped back to left back in place of Ben Walster, while Jefferson Louis came in to face his old club with Ryan Blake dropping to the bench.

With Farnborough having lost their last game 6-0 both sides were short on confidence, and there was a muted atmosphere in the ground which was not helped by the game being played in incessant rain.  Chesham had the first moment of not on 15 minutes, when a Lewis Rolfe free kick was helped on by Jefferson Louis and Tom Hitchcock’s shot was saved by home keeper Sam Mason.  Shortly afterwards Farnborough’s Andrew Sealey-Harris worked a shooting chance but Alex Tokarczyk spread himself to block.  On 28 minutes Chesham scored the game’s only goal, when Bradley Clayton dispossessed Bradley Simms on the left and squared for Oran Swales to turn into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.  Two minutes later Brendan Murphy-McVey’s shot was well saved by Tokarczyk at the expense of a corner, and that was the sum total of the action in the first half.

In the second minute after the restart a long crossfield ball found Michael Fernandes in space, only for Fernandes to shoot straight at Alex Tokarczyk.  However the home side never built up any serious pressure on the Chesham goal and there was very little goalmouth action.  Midway through the half Oran Swales shot across the home goal from wide on the left, then two minutes later Bradley Clayton ran to the edge of the area and fired in a low shot that Mason dived to his left to save.  Nine minutes from time Farnborough had their best moment of the match, when a Kurtis Cumberbatch corner was pushed out by Alex Tokarczyk and Connor Calcutt hooked the loose ball goalwards but it hit the post and bounced out.  Three minutes later Tokarczyk held a long-range effort from Connor Cullen, then Chesham broke away and Sam Barker’s cross came to Bradley Clayton whose shot was tipped over the bar by Mason.  Eventually Chesham were able to see out the game in relative comfort to secure an important three points.
