Chesham United Man of the Match: Steve Brown
Bradley Clayton returned after two months to score a late winner which brought Chesham their first win in four games. Chesham deserved their win as they were the only team attempting to play positive football, while Wimborne concentrated on trying to keep the point that they started with. Romario Hart and Karl Oliyide replaced Eoin Casey and Zak Joseph in the starting line-up, while Bradley Clayton returned on the bench after missing thirteen games.
It became clear very early on that the visitors would be content with a draw as they concentrated on keeping Chesham out. However Chesham were unable to break down a packed midfield and defence and the result was a dull first half. Midway through the half Romario Hart got away down the right and drilled the ball across the goal, just too far ahead of the incoming Dave Pearce. On 38 minutes Wimborne keeper Cameron Plain was booked for coming out of his area to bring down Karl Oliyide, but Chesham were unable to make use of the resulting free kick. In stoppage time a Pearce free kick was acrobatically tipped round the post by Plain. The resulting corner was cleared and Sam Jenkins mishit a shot that fell to Karl Oliyide, but he could only turn the ball against a post.
In the second half Wimborne became even more defensive as Chesham increased the pressure. Early on Karl Oliyide broke away down the left and shot but Plain dived to his left to save. Chesham’s players were becoming frustrated by Wimborne’s tactics and Romario Hart was booked following an off-the-ball incident. Adam Martin, who had replaced the injured Ronny Mfinda, headed over from a corner. On the hour Romario Hart ran down the left and squared to Dave Pearce who seemed sure to score but managed to lift the ball over an open goal. Midway through the half a Romario Hart shot was deflected for a corner, and the kick was cleared as far as Adam Martin whose shot from just inside the area was kicked off the line. Steve Brown glanced a header wide from an Adam Martin long throw, but Chesham finally broke through six minutes from time. Following a right-wing move Zak Joseph drilled the ball across goal and Bradley Clayton touched it into the net at the near post. In the next minute a Karl Oliyide shot took a slight deflection but Plain was able to save. Shortly afterwards Tony-James Lee became the fifth Wimborne player to be shown a yellow card, and in the 89th minute he had Wimborne’s one and only shot on goal but Jonathan North parried and the ball was cleared.
