Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce
Chesham scraped into the next round of the FA Trophy after trailing for nearly all the game. After being comfortably second best in the first half Chesham gradually clawed their way back into the game, but it looked like being in vain until Eoin Casey’s late late equaliser. There were five changes to the starting line-up – Jeanmal Prosper, Kyle Watson, Steve Brown, Tyrone Lewthwaite and Dave Pearce replacing Sam Jenkins, Adam Martin, Kieran Murphy, Eoin Casey and Jake Cass who were all on the bench.
Chesham were caught cold when the visitors opened the scoring in the eighth minute, Omari Hibbert getting to the by-line on the left and pulling the ball back for Aaron Watson to fire home from close range. Four minutes later Chesham gave the ball away inside their own half, and Ryan Gondoh set up Hibbert but Sam Beasant rushed out to save at the striker’s feet. Chesham began to come into the game and Jeanmal Prosper’s low cross just eluded Tyrone Lewthwaite, then Bradley Clayton fired in an angled drive that was well saved by keeper Tyler McCarthy. However on 24 minutes Chesham again lost possession in their own half and Ricardo Thompson sent Aaron Watson clear to shoot past the advancing Sam Beasant to make it 2-0. Chesham began to put some pressure on and Dave Pearce crossed to Zak Joseph who mistimed his near-post header, then Dave Pearce broke clear and shot into the corner of the net but was flagged offside. On 38 minutes Pearce crossed to Tyrone Lewthwaite who mistimed a header with only McCarthy to beat, then in stoppage time McCarthy dived to his right to keep out a low shot from Billy Adcock.
Chesham brought on Jake Cass at half-time and the switch paid off within 90 seconds, as Cass controlled the ball and sent Bradley Clayton clear to score Chesham’s first home goal of the season. Chesham went on to dominate the second half, but were denied by some fine goalkeeping and desperate defending. On 57 minutes Dave Pearce took a free kick from the edge of the area but McCarthy dived to tip the ball round the post, then Jake Cass fired across goal from out on the right but the ball flew just past the far post. Midway through the half Jamie McGeoghegan attempted to shepherd the ball out of play, but Zak Joseph whipped the ball away from him and set off down the by-line only to be floored by McGeoghegan’s despairing tackle. It was a clear penalty but Jake Cass’s kick was well saved by McCarthy. Jeanmal Prosper then set up Bradley Clayton whose shot was well saved by McCarthy, then Whyteleafe were awarded a penalty of their own when Ryan Gondoh was brought down. However Gondoh’s penalty was well saved by Sam Beasant. Chesham continued to pour forward and McCarthy made another fine save to keep out Steve Brown’s header, then Jeanmal Prosper’s low cross came to Jake Cass who lifted the ball over the bar from ten yards. As the referee called for four minutes of stoppage time Whyteleafe made a substitution to waste time, but the move backfired on them. The referee added an extra minute which allowed time for one more long ball into the Whyteleafe area, and sub Eoin Casey forced the ball over the line for a last-gasp equaliser. That sent the tie to penalties and Sam Beasant made two fine saves to put Chesham in control, and although Jake Cass fired wide the tie was sealed in Chesham’s favour when Antone Douglas hit the bar.
