Chesham United Man of the Match: Bradley Clayton
Chesham went down to their fourth defeat out of four which left them rooted to the bottom of the table. Against a Weymouth side who look set to be among the division’s front runners, Chesham finished well beaten although it took a highly dubious penalty decision to set them on their way. There were four changes to the starting eleven with Kieran Murphy and Adam Martin fit again, Richard Platt making his debut at right back and Devonte Totesaut recalled up front. They replaced Lewis Rolfe (suspended), Benji Crilley, Connor Toomey and Ryan Blake who was away.
Chesham made a bright start but Weymouth had the first chance of the game, when a defensive mistake let in Ben Thomson whose shot clipped the outside of a post. Bradley Clayton had Chesham’s first effort on goal with a shot that keeper Jordan Seabright dived to his left to hold. The visitors then came close again with a powerful drive from Brandon Goodship that flew just wide, then Chesham struggled to clear a corner and Josh McQuoid squared to Antonio Diaz who blasted the ball over from close range. Goodship tried another long-range effort which produced a fine diving save from Alex Tokarczyk, then Chesham came back with Ben Walster’s cross coming off the head of Ashley Wells to Devonte Totesaut whose header came off a defender and over the bar. On 40 minutes Weymouth again seized on a defensive error but Darren Locke looked to have saved the situation with a well-timed tackle, but the referee gave a penalty which Goodship converted to open the scoring. Chesham could have equalised almost immediately when Devonte Totesaut sent Oran Swales clear but Seabright came out to block the resulting shot.
Early in the second half Chesham went on the attack, but on 53 minutes the visitors broke and Ben Thomson worked himself a shooting chance and shot into the net for Weymouth’s second. Chesham needed to get back in the game quickly and Bradley Clayton’s shot was deflected over the bar after Devonte Totesaut had chested the ball down. Ben Walster’s corner was headed out, and Matt Bevans crossed back in to Adam Martin who headed over at the far post. Weymouth came back and Alex Tokarczyk rushed from his goal to save at the feet of Ben Thomson. However on 73 minutes Josh Carmichael’s through pass set up Goodship who rounded Tokarczyk and tapped in to make it 3-0. At the other end Seabright made a fine diving save from Jon-Jo Bates, then an Oran Swales shot was cleared off the line and Bradley Clayton’s follow-up tipped over by Seabright. However in the next minute Goodship ran through the centre of the Chesham defence to score his third and Weymouth’s fourth. Chesham looked demoralised and Abdulai Baggie could have scored the fifth late on but shot across goal, then in stoppage time Chesham cleared a corner but Jake McCarthy drilled the ball back across goal and Stephane Zubar touched it over the line.
