Chesham United Man of the Match: Steve Brown
Chesham came down to earth with a bump after Saturday’s convincing win. This was a complete contrast as Chesham never got into any kind of rhythm and finished up well beaten, the frustrating nature of the evening underlined by the two scrappy goals that gave Walton their victory. Chesham were due to be unchanged from Saturday’s win at Dorchester, but Lewis Rolfe was injured in the warm-up so Jon-Jo Bates started and Darren Locke returned on the bench.
Walton made the stronger start but only had one moment of real danger in the half, when James Ewington stole in on the visitors’ left but Steve Brown got in a challenge and Ewington’s shot was easily saved by Ben Goode. That was the only action at either end until the half-hour mark when Chesham had two efforts in quick succession, firstly when Jefferson Louis got behind the defence but his angled drive was beaten away by keeper Denzel Gerrar, then Heneghan set up Louis for a shot across goal that the keeper dived to hold. Chesham were starting to come into the game but the half ended in stalemate.
After the interval Walton again took control of the game but rarely threatened to score. On 52 minutes Taurean Roberts set up Kyron Farrell for a long-range effort that Ben Goode tipped round the post. Chesham brought on Bradley Clayton, and the move nearly paid off but Clayton was just unable to get on the end of Ryan Blake’s driven cross. Blake again broke down the right but shot straight at Gerrar, but Walton came back and took the lead on 72 minutes. Ben Goode parried a drive from James Ewington at the expense of a corner, which Kyron Farrell took and the ball was missed at the near post and bounced into the net off the unfortunate Jon-Jo Bates. Chesham came back with a long-range effort from Dave Pearce that flew just over, but shortly afterwards Jack Battie just missed the target with a rising drive at the other end. Chesham never looked like getting back in the game and Walton sealed the points two minutes from time, when Ben Goode went to take a high ball but dropped it at the feet of Taurean Roberts who tapped in.
