Chesham United Man of the Match: Adam Martin

Chesham went down to their second consecutive home defeat, as promotion-chasing Taunton staged a smash and grab raid.  Chesham dominated possession for long periods but rarely threatened to score, while the visitors were content to pinch a breakaway goal and concentrate on keeping Chesham out. Ronny Mfinda replaced Billy Adcock in the only change to the starting eleven from Tuesday’s win at Tiverton, so the returning duo of Dave Pearce and Jefferson Louis had to content themselves with a place on the bench.

The pattern of the game was set early on as Chesham played neat passing football without creating any clear-cut chances.  In fact their best moment early on came when Luke Heneghan swung in a free kick from the right, and the ball hit defender Shane White and could have gone anywhere but ended up just wide of the far post.  Taunton’s main threat came in the air, and Josh Nelmes had a free header from a Ryan Brett free kick but headed the ball harmlessly across goal.  Just after the half-hour mark Luke Heneghan’s corner was headed back across goal by Kieran Murphy but the ball flew across goal and out for a goal kick.  On 43 minutes Taunton scored the game’s only goal against the run of play, when Lewis Hall’s long cross was headed in at the far post by towering striker Matt Wright.  In the next minute the visitors could have doubled their lead, when Pierce Mitchell pulled the ball back from the by-line but Ollie Chamberlain mishit his shot wide.  In stoppage time Bradley Clayton worked himself a shooting chance on his left foot and his effort beat keeper Lloyd Irish but just cleared the bar.

Chesham’s best effort of the game came in the fifth minute after the restart, when Adam Martin ran forward and unleashed a shot that beat Irish but smacked against the post.  Shortly afterwards Chesham won a free kick in a dangerous situation but Luke Heneghan’s kick was comfortably saved by Irish.  In a rare Taunton attack Dan Sullivan collected a hurried clearance on the edge of the area only to mishit his shot well wide.  Fifteen minutes from time Pierce Mitchell was booked for bringing down Ryan Blake on the edge of the area, Dave Pearce came on as a substitute and took the kick only for the ball to glance off the defensive wall and just over the bar.  Taunton had long since given up any idea of trying to attack and were content to waste time at every opportunity.         Chesham continued to push forward but ultimately the visitors were able to see out the game in relative comfort.
