Chesham United Man of the Match: Adam Martin

For the second time in three weeks Chesham missed the chance to put some distance between themselves and the other promotion chasers.  Although not at their best Chesham went in at half-time with a one-goal lead having missed two other great chances, but a jittery second-half performance allowed Swindon to end their unbeaten home league record. There were two changes to the team with Karl Oliyide ill and Billy Adcock injured, so Dave Pearce and Bayley Brown came in.

After an uneventful opening quarter hour, Chesham had the first real chance when Steve Brown had a free header from Dave Pearce’s free kick but completely missed the ball.  Chesham were starting to put on the pressure with Eoin Casey heading wide from a Dave Pearce cross, then keeper Martin Horsell dived to his left to hold Zak Joseph’s long shot.  Just after the half-hour a good run from Zak Joseph set up Bayley Brown who mishit a shot wide from the edge of the area.   However three minutes later good work by Bradley Clayton on the left set up Dave Pearce who drilled a shot low into the corner of the net from 25 yards.  Four minutes later Pearce crossed from the right to Bradley Clayton, who shot first-time but mishit the ball wide with only Horsell to beat.

Early in the second half the visitors began to come into the game for the first time, but Chesham still had the better chances.  Bradley Clayton cut in from the right and shot just wide of the near post, then Zak Joseph fed Bayley Brown who shot high and wide from a good position.  However just after the hour mark the visitors were awarded a penalty when Harry Williams was tripped just inside the area, and Michael Hopkins beat Ben Goode from the spot.  Chesham were rattled, and barely a minute later Hopkins crossed from the left and Mat Liddiard gave Swindon a shock lead with a near-post header.  It could have been even worse four minutes later, but Conor McDonagh blazed over after Harry Williams pulled the ball back from the by-line.  Chesham attempted to get back in the game but their confidence had gone, although Steve Brown headed wide of the far post from Dave Pearce’s corner.  Late in the game Bradley Clayton’s shot beat Horsell but hit the side netting, then Clayton set up Dave Pearce whose shot bounced away off the body of the Swindon keeper.
