Chesham United Man of the Match: Kieran Murphy
A late goal from Dernell Wynter took Chesham through to the final of the Southern League Challenge Cup in a game that rarely rose above mediocre. There were seven changes to the starting line-up, as a number of regulars were rested. 19-year-old James Hoskins made his debut after signing on work experience from the Watford academy, while 16-year-old Chesham academy prospect Blaaze Lawrence was on the bench.
The visitors had the advantage of the wind in the first half and had more of the early possession. In the fourth minute Adam Mills got to the by-line on the visitors’ left and pulled the ball back but William Hunt failed to connect at the far post. At the other end a mishit cross from Bradley Clayton forced visiting goalkeeper Marcus Garnham to tip the ball away at the far post. Chesham’s best moment of the half came when Bradley Clayton led a breakaway and attempted to set Dernell Wynter clear, but his through ball was not accurate enough and Russell Short intercepted. In stoppage time Garnham came forward to pump the ball back into the Chesham area following a corner, and Adam Mills shot on the turn but failed to get any power into his effort and James Hoskins saved comfortably.
In the second half Chesham came into the game more but there was a lack of goalmouth action at either end. In fact it was not until the last quarter-hour that either side produced a worthwhile effort on goal, when Sandro Costa and Bradley Clayton combined and Clayton’s powerful shot was clawed round the post by Garnham. Just when it seemed as if the tie was heading for penalties Chesham broke the deadlock on 83 minutes. Dernell Wynter found some space on the left and squeezed a shot into the tiny gap between Garnham and his near post, the shot hitting the inside of the post before going in. The visitors never looked like retrieving the situation after that, and Chesham had one more effort on goal when Bradley Clayton combined with Sandro Costa but his final shot was comfortably saved by Garnham.
