Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce

Chesham eventually came through a searching test against their FA Cup opponents from the Wessex League. Chesham struggled for long periods and even fell behind early in the second half, but a double substitution on the hour changed the course of the game. Mark Kirby returned to the team in the midfield role vacated by Adam Martin who was on holiday. The other two changes saw Jefferson Louis and Eoin Casey swap places with Karl Oliyide and Romario Hart who were both on the bench, alongside Ronny Mfinda and Jeanmal Prosper who returned after injury.

After a bright start by both teams Chesham had the first chance in the twelfth minute, when Dernell Wynter and Jefferson Louis broke into the visitors’ area and the ball dropped to Mark Kirby whose powerful drive forced a fine diving save from keeper Chris Harris.  At the other end Samuel Williams glanced a header wide from a Joshua Burrowes corner, then Billy Oram’s 30-yard drive flew just past the post.  Harris again excelled to turn away a Dave Pearce effort, then at the other end Bradley Wilson forced Ben Goode to dive and turn away a shot from distance.  Chesham came back with a shot on the turn from Dave Pearce that flew just over, then Harris was again called into action to save Dernell Wynter’s low drive.  Shortly before half-time Dave Pearce broke away down the right and set up Dernell Wynter but his shot lacked power and Harris was able to save easily.  The half ended with Fleet’s Bradley Wilson shooting just off target after cutting in from the left.

The course of the game changed when the visitors took the lead three minutes into the second half, Bradley Passfield heading in at the far post after a corner had been cleared and the ball crossed back in.  Chesham needed a fresh impetus and a double substitution just before the hour did the trick.  Four minutes after coming on Karl Oliyide ran at the visitors’ defence and pulled the ball back from the by-line, Eoin Casey’s shot was saved but Bayley Brown hooked the loose ball into the net.  Chesham were still looking dangerous and Harris just got to the ball ahead of Dernell Wynter after Steve Brown challenged for a free kick.  On 69 minutes sub Jeanmal Prosper crossed from the left and Eoin Casey’s far-post header gave Chesham the lead.  Six minutes later it was 3-1 after Dave Pearce seized on a poor throw-out by Harris, his shot was blocked as was Romario Hart’s follow-up but Karl Oliyide followed up to score.  Chesham were now in control and Romario Hart missed his kick in front of goal from Dave Pearce’s cross, then an angled drive from Dernell Wynter was tipped onto the near post by Harris.  The game seemed to be meandering to a close, but in stoppage time Enow Ojong’s long cross was headed in by Jake Hammond to halve the deficit.  However three minutes later Karl Oliyide ran clear of a tiring defence, and set up Romario Hart to score Chesham’s fourth.
