Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce

With most of the top teams not in league action Chesham took advantage by moving to the top of the table with this win over mid-table Farnborough. Once Chesham broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time they never looked like losing that advantage, and made things safe with another goal midway though the second half. With Jonathan North having been recalled by Wealdstone in the week, Ben Goode returned in goal while the only other change saw Kyle Watson return after suspension. The match was played in incessant rain but the conditions did not unduly affect the game.

In the second minute Chesham took a corner short, Dave Pearce crossed in and Adam Martin’s header was tipped over by keeper Liam Beach.  The game then went into a quiet spell until Ben Goode saved a free kick from Andrew Sealy-Harris, Chesham broke away and Dave Pearce’s long-range effort was tipped over by Beach.  The visitors then had their best efforts of the game, when Ben Goode beat away a shot from Jordan Alawode-Williams and tipped Connor Cullen’s low shot round the post.  Towards half-time Chesham increased the pressure and Zak Joseph’s long-range effort was tipped away by Beach.  Zak Joseph then crossed in and Mark Kirby’s header was scrambled away by Beach, then Joseph lifted a cross to the far post but Bradley Clayton could not get over the top of the ball and his header cleared the bar with the goal at his mercy.  However in stoppage time Chesham broke through, when Dave Pearce crossed low from the by-line and Eoin Casey drilled the ball into the net at the far post.

Chesham continued to push forward in the second half, and Beach blocked a shot from Zak Joseph early on.  Mark Kirby got his head to a Pearce corner but his effort lacked power and Beach saved, then Eoin Casey nodded a Pearce cross towards goal but again Beach was able to save easily.  However on 68 minutes Dave Pearce’s left-wing free kick was headed in at the far post by Mark Kirby to make it 2-0.  Farnborough looked a beaten side and Dave Pearce worked a chance and shot but Courtney Fearn cleared off the line.  In stoppage time Romario Hart set up Bradley Clayton who blazed over the bar with only Beach to beat.  The game ended on a sour note when Farnborough’s Adam Brice was sent off in stoppage time for elbowing Romario Hart.
