Chesham United Man of the Match: Zak Joseph

Chesham made it to the last 16 of the Southern League Challenge Cup with this win over their opponents from Division One Central.  Chesham put out a stronger team than they might have had but for the postponement of Saturday’s game at Tiverton.  Jonathan North returned in goal, David Sota replaced Kyle Watson who was serving a one-match ban, and Bradley Clayton and Dave Pearce came in for Karl Oliyide and Romario Hart.

Zak Joseph, playing his first match since extending his loan spell from Hampton and Richmond, fired in an early effort which was well-struck but straight at keeper Leigh Bedwell.  Didcot threatened when Denilson Silva headed over from Cameron McNeill’s cross, but in the fifteenth minute Zak Joseph put Chesham ahead with a powerful drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner of the net.  Shortly afterwards Zak Joseph squared to Bradley Clayton whose angled effort flew across goal, then a short free kick routine ended with Eoin Casey laying the ball off to Mark Kirby who shot over the bar.  On 25 minutes Bradley Clayton broke away down the right and set up Eoin Casey whose shot was saved by Bedwell, but Dave Pearce got to the loose ball and lifted it into the net to make it 2-0.  However just after the half-hour mark Didcot broke quickly and George Reid attempted to round the advancing Jonathan North, only to be brought down just inside the area.  North was booked and Oliver Thomas halved the deficit from the resulting penalty.  Towards half-time both sides went close, Luke Carnell heading just wide from Cameron McNeill’s corner, then David Sota’s low cross was touched on at the near post and put in by Eoin Casey but he was flagged offside.

Chesham went on the attack straight from the restart and Dave Pearce’s shot was cleared off the line, then Bradley Clayton’s long-range chip was tipped over by Bedwell.  However Chesham restored their two-goal lead shortly afterwards, when Eoin Casey crossed back in after a corner was cleared and Mark Kirby’s glancing header found the net just inside the far post.  On the hour mark a Dave Pearce free kick was punched away by Bedwell as Chesham continued to press.  Both sides made two substitutions, then Chesham were forced into a third as Carl Pearce made his debut in place of Kieran Murphy.  Didcot occasionally threatened and Denilson Silva crossed to Caelan Isaac whose header came off a defender for a corner.  However Chesham were still looking dangerous, and Dernell Wynter set up Romario Hart whose shot was saved by Bedwell diving low to his left.  Late in the game George Reid ran at the Chesham defence and chipped the ball past the advancing Jonathan North but well wide of the near post.  Chesham get their fourth goal when Zak Joseph’s right-wing cross was struck first-time past Bedwell by Dernell Wynter.
