Chesham United Man of the Match: Zak Joseph
Chesham reached the semi-finals of the League Cup with an ultimately comfortable win against Premier Division Central side Coalville Town. The visitors had the better of the first half and Chesham were hanging on at times, but once Bayley Brown broke the deadlock there was only going to be one winner As often in this competition there were a number of team changes, seven in all as the entire bench from Saturday’s game started, plus Sam Jenkins returned and Ryan Phillips made his first appearance since the Taunton away game back in August.
Coalville sit just outside the play-off zone in their division, and made a confident start but without creating any chances. Midway through the half Ben Goode pushed away a powerful shot from Tom Berridge, then Chesham threatened for the first time when Dernell Wynter broke away and slotted the ball past keeper Saul Deeney but also past the far post. Towards half-time Zak Joseph set up a shooting chance for Dernell Wynter but Deeney tipped over, then at the other end Jake Bennett fed Tom Berridge but his shot was well saved by Ben Goode. In stoppage time Chesham took the lead after a corner was cleared, Zak Joseph fired in a shot that was beaten away by Deeney and a defender cleared the ball straight to Bayley Brown who tapped in from close range.
Chesham played with greater confidence in the early stages for the second half, and Zak Joseph was unfortunate not to double the lead when his ferocious drive beat Deeney but bounced down off the bar. In the next minute Bradley Clayton attempted to work a shooting chance, only to be tripped by Stuart Pierpoint for a penalty which Romario Hart put away confidently to make it 2-0. The visitors showed little interest in attempting to retrieve the deficit, and Adam Martin tried a long-range effort which flew just wide. Ten minutes from time Bradley Clayton made it 3-0 in some style, with a rising drive from the right edge of the area which flew into the far top corner. Coalville looked for a consolation and late in the game Ben Goode made a fine low save, diving to his right to keep out Kairo Mitchell’s low drive. In stoppage time Joe Doyle-Charles headed over from Alex Dean’s corner, but the game was long since over as a contest.
