Chesham United Man of the Match: Kyle Watson
Chesham reached the last eight of the League Challenge Cup with a fairly comfortable win. Banbury came into the game second in the Premier Division Central, but Chesham were always in control of the game after taking a two-goal lead late in the first half. There were five changes to the starting line-up to give match practice to some squad players who have missed out in recent weeks. Banbury also made five changes from their last league game. On a cold night in front of a sparse crowd the game, like so many in this competition, lacked the intensity of a league encounter.
In fact it wasn’t until the 26th minute that either side created a chance, when Sam Jenkins got forward down the right and crossed but Romario Hart missed his kick at the far post. In the next minute Banbury broke down the left and John Mills had a shot which was blocked at the expense of a corner. However Chesham took control of the game with two quick goals just after the half-hour mark. Billy Adcock floated a free kick into the area and a bout of head tennis followed, before Karl Oliyide squared the ball for Dernell Wynter to convert at the near post. Two minutes later a neat Chesham move down the left saw Ronny Mfinda cross low, and Dernell Wynter side-footed home from close range to make it 2-0.
The second half had the feel of a training game as Banbury made little impact on the Chesham defence. Early in the half a Karl Oliyide cross was blocked, and Dernell Wynter tried an ambitious overhead that was straight at keeper Jack Harding. Shortly afterwards Romario Hart won the ball in the Banbury half and rounded the advancing Harding, but the defence got back to clear the danger. On 77 minutes Romario Hart headed over from a Dave Pearce corner, then at the other end Craig Fasanmade worked a shooting chance only to fire straight at Ben Goode. In stoppage time Goode was called into serious action for the only time in the game, diving to turn a shot from Eddie Odhiambo round the post.
