Chesham United Man of the Match: Bayley Brown

A second-half penalty sent Chesham out of the FA Cup at the second qualifying round stage. Hampton may be bottom of the National League South, but they signed a number of new players in the week and that probably made the difference as Chesham struggled to break them down. Adam Martin returned to the starting line-up, replacing Sam Jenkins with Jeanmal Prosper reverting to right back, and the only other change saw Romario Hart swap places with Eoin Casey who was on the bench.

Chesham made the stronger start and in the second minute Dave Pearce crossed from the by-line on the left to Romario Hart who headed wide of the far post.  Three minutes later a Pearce free kick was headed out as far as Adam Martin whose shot was pushed away by a diving Dan Lincoln in the visitors’ goal.  The keeper, who was making his debut for the club and who played cricket for Middlesex in three T20 matches in the summer, was rarely troubled after that as the game went into a quiet phase.  It was something of a surprise when Hampton took the lead just after the half-hour mark, Sam Deadfield working the ball onto his left foot and unleashing a rising drive that flew into the roof of the net at the near post.  However the lead was to last only five minutes as Karl Oliyide crossed from the by-line, the ball came to Romario Hart whose shot came back off the post and Steve Brown bundled in the rebound.  The half ended with a diving header over the bar by Steve Brown from a Dave Pearce corner.

Again there was little to choose between the sides until twelve minutes into the second half, when the ball ran loose in the Chesham area and Jake Gray made the most of a slight tap on the ankle from Jeanmal Prosper.  Danilo Orsi-Dadomo converted the penalty although Ben Goode got a hand to it.  Shortly afterwards Dernell Wynter worked the ball onto his left foot and fired in a shot that took a slght deflection and flew just over.  The visitors were using any means possible to deal with the aerial threat of Steve Brown, and on one occasion he was clearly held in the penalty area but the referee gave nothing.  Shortly afterwards a slip by Jeanmal Prosper left Ryan Hill in the clear but Ben Goode came out to block.  Chesham continued to press but the visitors’ defence dealt with everything that was thrown at them.  Two minutes from time Dave Pearce went for goal from a free kick but Lincoln dived to his right to tip the ball away.  However Hampton had the last chance of the game when a Bobby Mills shot was blocked by Steve Brown at the expense of a corner.
