Recap
Chesham put last Monday’s FA Cup defeat firmly behind them as they clinched their third successive league win and kept a first league clean sheet of the season. Worthing were one of the division’s form teams but Chesham dominated the game and should possibly have won by a bigger margin. Ben Goode was injured in training in the week so Cian Moore returned for his first appearance for the club in over a year. Callum Adebiyi was suspended after picking up five yellow cards and Samson Esan and Nathan Minhas dropped to the bench. They were replaced by Bradley Clayton, Joe Grant and Ryan Upward so Chesham reverted to four at the back.
After a quiet opening the first major incident of the game came in the fourteenth minute. Mitchell Weiss was clean through on goal, Worthing keeper Chris Haigh came out of his area and clearly knocked the ball away with his arm but the referee gave nothing. The incident seemed to fire up the Chesham players as they increased the tempo and dominated the rest of the half. On 24 minutes Worthing attempted to play the ball out from the back, but Joe Grant won the ball and set up Bradley Clayton whose shot from the edge of the area came back off the post. Lewis Rolfe then broke forward and shot from the edge of the area, but the ball took a double deflection was eventually cleared. However on 32 minutes a Rolfe free kick was headed on by Connor Stevens and Mitchell Weiss shot across the keeper. A defender slid in and tried to clear but only succeeded in knocking the ball into the net at the near post, but Weiss’s shot was going in anyway so he was credited with the goal. Nine minutes later Worthing had their only real chance of the game, when Jack Spong set up Danny Cashman who fired across goal from out on the left. Chesham came back and T’Sharne Galimore won the ball and advanced to the edge of the area only to shoot straight at Haigh. In stoppage time Worthing’s Glen Rea was shown a straight red card for a foul on Joe Grant, which may have been slightly harsh but the referee was possibly trying to balance things up. Chesham again came close when Ryan Upward had a shot blocked after the visitors’ defence failed to clear a free kick, then Haigh saved at the feet of Mitchell Weiss and the ball came to Joe Grant but Alfie Young got back to clear off the line.
Worthing made a double substitution at half-time, and started the second half strongly but faded. Just before the hour mark Chesham made it 2-0, when Haigh came out of his area but lost possession and Mitchell Weiss lobbed into the unguarded net from 35 yards. Chesham were now in full control and Joe Grant sent Bradley Clayton clear, but as Clayton prepared to take on the goalkeeper the defence got back to stifle the threat. Worthing’s main tactic was to use the long throws of Ollie Black, but every one was dealt with by Cian Moore and his defenders. At the other end Ryan Upward’s diving header from a Bradley Clayton cross was just wide. Late in the game Worthing’s Jack Spong glanced a header wide from Kane Wills’ ball into the area, but Chesham still carried the greater threat. In stoppage time sub Nathan Minhas broke clear but fired over the bar with just the keeper to beat, then Minhas worked a shooting chance but Haigh parried and Mitchell Weiss’ follow-up effort was blocked.
