Recap
Chesham are still without a win after three games as Weston-super-Mare clinched their first points of the season. It is never a good sign when the first topic of conversation after the game is the performance of the referee, but that was inevitable after he awarded two highly debatable penalties which allowed the visitors to claim victory. Chesham made four changes to the starting eleven – Steve Brown, Jack Connors, Ryan Upward and Samson Esan coming in and Jack Cawley, T’Sharne Gallimore, Joe Grant and Ashley Lodge dropping to the bench. The fifth substitute was Omar Rowe who replaced Avan Jones.
Chesham had more of the ball in the early stages but neither side looked remotely like scoring until the 27th minute, when Mitchell Weiss crossed low from the left touchline and Ryan Upward’s shot beat keeper William Buse all ends up but crashed against the bar. Shortly afterwards Weston had their first attempt on goal when James Dodd’s 30-yard free kick just cleared the bar. Chesham came back with Nathan Minhas setting up Samson Esan who shot high and wide from a good position.
Early in the second half Weston’s James Waite pulled the ball back to Brandon Bak who shot high and wide. Weston were starting to threaten for the first time but there was a huge element of controversy about the goal that gave them the lead. Dylan Kadji broke into the Chesham area and Steve Brown got in a sliding tackle only for the ball to strike his arm, and the referee gave a penalty although it seemed hard to see how Brown could have got out of the way. Luke Coulson send Ben Goode the wrong way from the spot. Chesham showed more urgency and Callum Adebiyi headed wide of the far post from a Jack Connors corner. Ten minutes later Adebiyi again got his head to a Connors corner but could only glance the ball wide of the far post. Shortly afterwards good work from Mitchell Weiss on the right led to Nathan Minhas shooting but Buse just got a hand to the ball to tip it over the bar. The game became niggly as the referee struggled to impose his authority as the visitors were content to waste time at every opportunity. However on 84 minutes a throw from Jack Connors on the right ran loose in the Weston penalty area, and Connor Stevens netted from close range to level the scores. Chesham were looking the more likely to get a late winner and one cross from Connor Stevens on the right came off a defender and just cleared the bar with the keeper beaten. However Weston broke away and Luke Coulson had a shooting chance, Connor Stevens went in to block and the ball hit him on the arm from only a couple of yards away. Again the referee gave a penalty although it could hardly have been intentional, and Coulson again beat Goode from the spot.
