Recap

Chesham pulled off a remarkable victory against all the odds to overcome a Hampton side that came into the game on a run of four successive wins.  This was not a result that anyone could have predicted on the hour mark, as Chesham had been reduced to ten men and the visitors had just equalised after dominating the game.  However the ten men fashioned a superb winning goal and held out in a frantic finish. Chesham made six changes following Saturday’s defeat at Truro.  Lewis Rolfe was unwell and Connor Stevens injured, and Connor Roberts, Callum Adebiyi, Ashley Lodge and Nathan Minhas were on the bench.  Avan Jones, Steve Brown, Jack Connors, Joe Grant, Bradley Clayton and Samson Esan came in.

The visitors made a confident start with Mauro Vilhete heading a good chance over the bar in the third minute.  Chesham came back with Mitchell Weiss trying a chip from the left edge of the area which floated just off target, but Hampton went on to dominate the early stages.  Vilhete shot well wide after Alfie Williams had been tackled in the Chesham box, then James Roberts was clean through on goal but Ben Goode came out to block.  Goode again produced a fine save when Mauro Vilhete turned an Alfie Williams free kick towards goal.  Chesham began to get back into the game, but it was still against the run of play when they took the lead on 33 minutes.  A long throw from Jack Cawley caused problems in the Hampton box and the ball fell for Bradley Clayton to drill into the net from just inside the area.  The visitors came back and Ben Goode produced another fine save just before half-time, diving to his left to tip a right-foot drive from Vilhete round the post.  However Chesham had one other moment of danger, when Ben Goode’s free kick fell to Samson Esan who tried his luck from fully 40 yards but keeper Ted Curd stretched to save above his head.

Chesham’s hopes were hit four minutes into the second half, when T’Sharne Gallimore was shown a second yellow card.  Chesham were looking to regroup when the visitors were awarded a penalty two minutes later, when Jack Cawley brought down James Roberts.  Roberts himself scored from the spot and it began to look as if Chesham would do well to get anything out of the game. Callum Adebiyi came on as an extra defender, and Ben Goode had to pull off another spectacular save to turn away Mauro Vilhete’s header just after the hour.  However Chesham amazingly retook the lead on 75 minutes with a fine team goal.  Mitchell Weiss ran down the touchline on the left from midway inside the Chesham half, Alex Lafleur went on the overlap and crossed to Nathan Minhas who worked a shooting chance and blasted the ball into the net from fifteen yards.  Four minutes later Hampton won a free kick near the by-line, and Alfie Williams’ effort hit the bar albeit from a very narrow angle.  Late in the game Hampton laid siege to the Chesham goal but their lack of firepower was to prove costly as a number of crosses were headed away by the home defence.
