Recap

Chesham twice fought back from a goal down to earn a point in this mid-table battle.  After a slow start this was an entertaining game, in which a draw was probably a fair result on the balance of play although Chelmsford will be regretting a horrendous miss near the end. Chesham made five changes to the side that beat Maidstone on Saturday – Avan Jones, Lewis Rolfe, Matt Lench, Samson Esan and Karl Oliyide coming in for Connor Roberts, Callum Adebiyi, Ashley Lodge, Joe Grant and Mitchell Weiss.

The visitors came into the game one point behind Chesham and made the more positive start but without creating any chances of note.  Chesham dealt with the early threat and the game became scrappy until Chelmsford took the lead on 37 minutes.  Kane Crichlow’s through pass set up Saleem Akanbi who fired past Dillon Addai as the keeper came out to challenge.  Chesham upped the tempo and five minutes later Harry Barbrook was booked for a foul on Nathan Minhas.  Matt Lench took the free kick out on the right and Lewis Rolfe netted with a glancing header just inside the far post.  Chesham continued to push forward and forced a succession of corners as the half drew to a close.  In the last minute of the half Alex Lafleur’s shot was blocked on the line, then another effort from T’Sharne Gallimore was touched away by keeper Ted Collins.

The visitors started the second half strongly and in the opening minute Dillon Addai parried a shot from Jake Hyde.  Six minutes later Avan Jones attempted to clear but caught the incoming Jacob Bland just inside the area, and the referee gave a penalty which Jake Hyde converted.  As Chesham pushed forward they were occasionally caught on the break, and Bland was just unable to get on the end of a low cross from Cameron James.  Chesham brought on an extra attacker in Bradley Clayton with Lewis Rolfe switching to right back in place of Avan Jones, while Chelmsford brought on an extra defender in Joe Rye.  Midway through the half a Matt Lench free kick was headed into the path of Karl Oliyide who shot wide, then at the other end a mazy run from Kane Crichlow resulted in a goalmouth scramble but the ball was eventually cleared.  Chesham came back and a long-range effort from Bradley Clayton was tipped away by Collins, after which Chesham made a quadruple substitution.  The visitors should have wrapped the game up on 84 minutes when Jacob Bland set up Kane Crichlow who skied the ball way over the bar with only Addai to beat.  Shortly afterwards Addai made a smart low save to keep out a shot from Bradley Williams, but Chesham fought back and on a penalty themselves in the next minute.  Bradley Clayton challenged for the ball in the visitors area and Mitchell Weiss won possession only to be floored by the keeper’s late challenge.  Collins was booked and could have been shown a second yellow for some terrible time-wasting, but Matt Lench rose above the gamesmanship with a well-struck penalty that the keeper got a hand to but could not keep out.  Chelmsford had one more moment in stoppage time when Chesham failed to clear a Ryan Blackman corner and the ball was eventually blocked on the line before being cleared.
