Recap
Chesham moved into the comfort of lower mid-table with this fine win. Welling went into the game in the top half of the table but Chesham were the better side for most of the afternoon, took a deserved first-half lead and successfully killed the game off late on. There were six changes to the starting eleven, three of them enforced as Alex Lafleur and Ryan Upward were injured and Nathan Minhas away, while Jack Cawley, Eoin Casey and Jack Connors dropped to the bench. They were replaced by Lewis Rolfe, Steve Brown, Connor Stevens, T’Sharne Gallimore, Ashley Lodge and Mitchell Weiss while Bradley Clayton and Connor Roberts were both back on the bench after injury.
Chesham were on top from the start and an early Omar Rowe corner caused chaos in the home defence before the ball was eventually scrambled clear. Welling had one early moment when Martell Taylor-Crossdale seized on a long clearance but his effort was blocked at the expense of a corner, but the rest of the half was dominated by Chesham. After a Welling corner was cleared Omar Rowe won the ball inside the Chesham half and ran clear but Lovett came out to save at the expense of a corner. Shortly afterwards another Rowe corner found the head of Callum Adebiyi but his effort was cleared off the line. Avan Jones then broke away down the right and crossed, Omar Rowe’s shot was blocked and Mitchell Weiss’s follow-up flew across goal and past the far post. Callum Adebiyi then tried a long shot which Lovett parried but could not hold, but Chesham eventually broke through on 26 minutes. Callum Adebiyi’s through ball set up Omar Rowe for a shot which was blocked but Mitchell Weiss collected the loose ball and fired into the net for his first goal for the club. Chesham continued to press and Mitchell Weiss and Steve Brown both had headers saved by Lovett. However Chesham had a scare in first-half stoppage time when Daniel Martin’s low cross-shot produced a fine low save from Ben Goode.
In the second half Welling began to come into the game, but Chesham had the first moment of note when Joe Grant’s shot was blocked as was the follow-up effort from Connor Stevens. Just after the hour mark Taylor-Crossdale, who had earlier been booked for shirt-pulling, dived when challenged by Ben Goode in an attempt to win a penalty and was shown a second yellow. The game briefly threatened to boil over but Chesham weathered some home pressure and began to get back on top. On 72 minutes Omar Rowe’s through ball sent Mitchell Weiss clear, but Lovett came out to save and turned Ashley Lodge’s follow-up shot round the post. Six minutes later Chesham again broke away and Omar Rowe made it 2-0 with a low left-footed drive that Lovett got a hand to but could not keep out. Welling made a triple substitution but to no avail, and Chesham wrapped up the points on 85 minutes. This time T’Sharne Gallimore broke clear only for Lovett to block, but Mitchell Weiss lobbed the loose ball over the keeper and into the net. Chesham brought on Jack Connors who immediately sent Mitchell Weiss clear but again Lovett saved. There were nine minutes of stoppage time and in the eighth of those minutes the home side finally managed a consolation goal, when Jacob Mensah’s long free kick bounced over the head of Jack Cawley and Daniel Martin stole in to head past Goode.
