Following on from the statement on Friday regarding the club’s decision not to enter the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup, the Board of Chesham United would like to apologise to supporters for not making the announcement earlier and would like now to clarify the reasons behind the decision.
Chesham United Association Football Club makes a significant loss each year, a financial gap that if we are lucky may be filled by FA prize money, but more typically is filled by the Owner, Roger Payne. It is our job to ensure the club remains financially viable whilst also looking to provide the best possible level of football in the best possible facilities. To do that we obviously look at ways of increasing income, but must additionally look at taking cost out of the business where we can.
Whereas we appreciate many supporters are passionate about the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup and have very fond memories from it, none less so than last years fantastic win, the reality is that it is a costly competition to enter without prize money, poor attendances at matches, additional wages and not even a share of gate money from the final. It was not an easy decision to make, but one we felt was ultimately right to help in our quest to keep the club sustainable.
We would ask supporters to appreciate that we are going through a transitional period behind the scenes at Chesham United, including replacing the club and fixture secretary over the summer, and making the announcement was lost in amongst all the other football and commercial activity being prepared for the new season – Again we apologise for this oversight, and regret the fact that supporters first found out when the draw for the competition was made.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the loyal supporters for their backing and patience following a difficult start to the season, we can assure you that we share your pain and frustration, but remain confident that things will turn around on the pitch.
Thank you for your understanding and we will continue to keep you informed of developments at the club when appropriate.
The Board of Directors, Chesham United FC
