Squad update from Andy Leese

As the squad prepares for the new season, Andy Leese gave us this update from yesterday's pre-season training session:

"We have been quiet since May regarding 1st team squad news. There has been plenty of activity within the club on other matters as you will have seen, but we have also been busy retaining the nucleus of last season's squad and recruiting players who we believe will strengthen us. I will update you in more detail over the next few weeks as pre-season has a habit of throwing up surprises and changes in personnel. It is my least favourite time in the year as players quite rightly decide what is best for them. We have retained the majority of the squad barring Curtis Ujah and Ash Smith. As we get players signed, I will let you know.

"I can confirm that we have agreed terms with two new players. Drew Roberts has agreed a return to the club after 2 seasons away at St Neots Town FC. Drew had a remarkable season here as we just missed out on promotion in 2014. Drew has consistently scored goals at every level he plays. You don't really know a player until you work with them, and having done that I know why Drew is so consistent. His work ethic is first class and he showed his character last season as he struggled with injury but still had a decent goal return. He is fully recovered and raring to go again. We dominated lots of games last year without scoring and Drew will bring that ability to take half chances. We have also added Brett Longden, a 21 year old defender who was at St Neots last season. Brett was a young professional at Luton Town FC prior to that. He has developed into a consistent defender who is comfortable in either full back position. Brett is another player with a winning mentality and I am sure he will be a real asset to the club and the group.

"We are close to agreeing terms with a couple of other players this week. They will add experience and quality to what we have as we look to improve on last season's showing. We will take a look at a few trialists this week as well, but we have less time this year and need to get settled as quickly as we can Last season was one that will live long in the memory, but we want to be less open as team if we are to do better. I want to challenge every area of the squad, as contentment in a team or club is the biggest threat to success. It all starts again today!"
