Wednesday 12th November
This was a competitive, but ultimately comfortable, Quarter Final victory for B&B Senior Cup holders Chesham Utd. Jack Mace made his first start for the first XI at right back and George Fenton partnered Darren Purse in the centre in a strong Utd starting line up
The light but persistent drizzle that fell not only before but throughout most of the match didn't make for easy playing conditions, and the opening phase of the game was relatively even as both teams found their feet and came to terms with the slick surface. Chesham then started to take the initiative and were rewarded with a goal from Dave Pearce on 24 minutes. Ryan Blake looked to have doubled Chesham's lead after some great work on the right by Inh Effiong to win and then get the ball across, but after consulting with his assistant the referee ruled the goal out. Despite further Chesham pressure, including a flurry of corners, Beaconsfield appeared to have done enough to hold out for 1-0 at the break, until George Fenton scored with a well directed header from another Utd corner right on 45 minutes to make the half time score 2-0.
The second half largely followed the pattern of the latter portion of the first 45 minutes, with Chesham the better and more incisive side, but Beaconsfield working hard across the park to deny The Generals and create the odd moment of their own. With no further goals to show for Chesham's efforts, and only ten minutes remaining it was beginning to look like the scoreline wouldn't reflect the balance of play or chances created. In the event, Chehsam's persistence paid off when the third goal came in the 82nd minute (Dave Pearce) and when another Pearce shot was saved on 90 minutes Connor Wood got Chesham's 4th when he followed up and drove home the rebound.
Chesham now prepare for further cup action with the visit to Chalfont St Peter in the Red Insure Cup round two on Tuesday 18th November, KO 19:45
Manager Andy Leese's commented
"I was pleased with how we played last night. The game took 20 minutes to settle, and we had a number of young lads in the side who needed time to settle as well. I felt we controlled the pace of the game and the only disappointment is that we did not score a few more in the middle part of the match. The young players like Connor Wood, George Fenton, Tom McConway, Eman Rowe and Jack Mace got another taste of 1st team action and did well. It was pleasing to see Connor and George score their first senior goals for the club. We now have a break on Saturday, which will hopefully allow injuries to Ashley Smith and Brathers to recover. We then commence another hectic spell of games as we look push up the League table.
We will need the squad we have to cope with the volume of games, and it is good to know we can rely on the younger players coming through. Paul and Martin do a great job with the lads that we bring to the club, in a demanding League, and as last night showed again we are getting it right"
