This Saturday 3rd December the 1st XI visit high flying Chippenham Town for this Evo-Stik Southern Premier League fixture.
Our hosts currently lie in third place with 42 points from 20 games. The Bluebirds enjoyed a storming start to the season winning seven and drawing two of their first nine SPL matches but more recently have lost three of their last four (all competitions), exiting first the FA Trophy 0-1 at home v Leiston and then the Wiltshire Senior Cup at the hands of Swindon Supermarine before recovering to thump Cambridge 5-0 in the league. However, the following Tuesday Chippenham went down to a shock 3-2 away league defeat at bottom placed Cinderford, in which the Gloucestershire side cleared several efforts off the line and held out to win in the face of heavy Bluebirds pressure.
The Generals won both encounters between these two teams in the promotion chasing 2013/14 season, but since then it has been honours even with two draws and a win apiece. In 2014/15 the sides drew 1-1 at Hardenhuish Park in November with Chippenham convincingly winning the return 3-0 at The Meadow in March. Last season the teams met twice within five days. A 2-2 away draw with goals from Ryan Blake and Kelvin Bossman on Tuesday 15th March was immediately followed by the return fixture at Chesham on the Saturday, in which Stephan Hamilton-Forbes back-heeled the ball into the net for his first goal for the club. With The Generals a goal to the good and looking comfortable Ryan Blake outpaced Jon Beeden and broke clear in first half stoppage time, only for Beeden to push Blake over on the edge of the area. It was a clear red card and the dismissal effectively put paid to the visitors' hopes. With the man advantage Chesham were able to relax and pass the ball around after the break. On 87 minutes Chippenham gave the home fans a scare with their one real chance of the game when a through ball set up Harry Grant who shot past Shane Gore, but also tamely past the far post.
There is a coach to Chippenham Town departing the club at 11.00am, with a number of seats available. Note the special price for this match for all supporters, fare £10 return. If you wish to travel please inform Brian McCarthy on 01442 871750 or email brianjmccarthy@virginmedia .com. For those travelling independently the ground is easily reached from the M4 J17. The venue is Hardenhuish Park, Bristol Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 6LR.
Chesham Utd Manager Andy Leese commented:
"After a frustrating afternoon at home last weekend, we travel to Chippenham tomorrow looking to continue our improved form. It will be a real challenge against one of the front runners who I expect to be in the shake up next April. We need to be disciplined against their goal threats, and make sure we are confident and stick to our game plan when we have the ball. We need to improve in the last third and I am confident that will come this month.
"It is another big month where we need to catch up our games in hand and see where it takes us. We should have a strong squad and will wait on Toby and Stephan to see how they are. Hope to see a few of you down there as we look to push on."
