Chesham Utd 2 Staines Town 0: excellent Generals go through to FA Cup 4RQ

Saturday 1st October

Drew Roberts penalty

Drew Roberts scores from the spot to seal the FA Cup win over Staines Town, in a great all round team performance from The Generals

Chesham Utd turned in a great performance to see off fancied Staines Town in this compelling FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie which provided non stop attacking football to entertain a good crowd

The visitors arrived in great form, unbeaten in eight, and gave Chesham an anxious first few minutes as they pressed hard. The Generals then picked up the mantle, moved the ball quickly and didn't look back, spending much of the first period in the vistors half. Chances came, but the Swan's goal wasn't breached and Staines broke to create opportunities of their own with balls cut back from the byline that flashed across the Chesham goal.

The talk at half time was of whether The Generals would come to rue not turning their dominance into goals but minds were put at rest just three minutes after the restart when Bruce Wilson seized on a loose clearance and passed to Barry Hayles, who broke past two defenders and squared for Drew Roberts to walk the ball into the net. Roberts was then pulled down by the Staines 'keeper and scored the resultant penalty to make the score Chesham Utd 2 Staines Town 0.

An outstanding and competitive win played in a good spirit, versus difficult opponents who contributed in full to an entertaining's afternoon's FA Cup football. We wish Staines Town every success for the remainder of their season.

A full match report will follow via the 1st XI Fixtures & Results page as usual.

andy leeseManager Andy Leese commented:

Probably our best performance of the season saw us through to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup for the second season running.

"The players executed the game plan perfectly. We started slowly, but I felt we shaded the first half in terms of chances and possession. The second half we started to press where we could in the last third and it paid off. Drew was back to what he does best, but he was supported by many other excellent individual performances on the day.

"Barry deserves a mention for a performance that both rolled back the years, and belied his age!"

"We wait with anticipation now to see where the next round takes us"
