Ryan Blake scorees Chesham's second: image courtesy of Trevor Hyde
The 1st XI returned to The Meadow after an absence of four weeks, and put recent disappointments on the road behind them with a very creditable 2-0 win over promotion chasing Hitchin that ended the Hertfordshire side's fourteen match unbeaten run
In an involving and tightly contested match beween two strong teams Chesham opened the scoring when Sam Youngs headed home from an excellently worked Dave Pearce cross, following good build up play on the left. The Hitchin 'keeper got a hand to the ball but was unable to keep the well directed header out.
Shortly after the restart a swift move on the left between Bruce Wilson and Dave Pearce resulted in a dangerous cross which Ryan Blake rose high to head home. Hitchin's queries as to whether the ball had crossed the line were to no avail as the referee's assistant, who was pefectly positioned, immediately confirmed the goal (pictured above). Thereafter Chesham defended more deeply and Hitchin pressed accordingly, but without seriously troubling Ashlee Jones. The result leaves Chesham in tenth place in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier table. Chesham Utd Manager Andy Leese commented
"A great response from the players last night to last week's results and performances. Hitchin were organized and lively as we expected, but we stuck to what was asked of us and deserved the win. The performance set the standard for us again, and we now have to keep with it if we want to make an impression at the top end of the table.
"There were some good individual performances last night and we will need everyone fit as we look to catch up games in hand over the next month.
"Redditch will provide another stiff test at the weekend as we look to build on Tuesday night. They have had some excellent results of late. We should have Brad back in contention at the weekend. I am not sure our injuries will have cleared up, but the players in the squad who have been patient showed in the last 2 games that they will take the opportunity to do well."
