Tuesday 25th October
A good crowd of 360, including Peterborough Utd Manager Grant McCann watching The Generals ahead of the teams' FA Cup First Round match on Nov 5th, witnessed a cracking game between two sides going all out for a win. Chesham's winning goal came from a Brad Wadkins header in the 14th minute, following excellent work by Drew Roberts. Brad was subsequently awarded Man of The Match for an excellent all round performnace
Chesham moved the ball fast and well and had the visitors on the back foot for periods, although Kettering played their part to the full and were always dangerous. Chesham deserved the win on the balance of play and chances created, but were indebted to another great defensive performance that protected Ashlee Jones' goal from the visiting threat. When The Poppies did finally get a clear sight of goal late on, the ball was smashed high to the relief of The Meadow faithful who went home happy with the result and appreciative of the entertainment served up by both sides. The result leaves Chesham in seventh place in the league table, with games in hand over all those above them. A full match report will follow via the 1st XI Fixtures & Results page as usual
Chesham have won eight and drawn two of their last ten, and now embark on a long sequence of away matches with cup action beckoning
The 1st XI now prepare for Saturday's FA Trophy First Round Qualifying match away at Leatherhead of the Ryman Isthmian League Premier Division.
Manager Andy Leese commented:
"We witnessed probably the best game of the season so far at the Meadow last night. It was two good teams going at it, and no shortage of quality. We responded well to the tempo that Kettering set. I was disappointed we didn't add to the goal we scored in the first half, and we were grateful to Ash for the save he made to keep us ahead. We came under pressure in the second half as Kettering changed their shape, but we defended marshalled by Pursey and MMK. Kettering could have scored at the end but by and large we limited their chances on goal across the game.
"Six points from these last two league games is exactly what we wanted prior to the Cup games, and leaves our league position looking healthy.
"In other news, Ben Ford has moved on to AFC Rushden. Ben wanted more regular game time and we wish him well. We will keep the squad under review as we always do, as well as keeping a keen eye on the progress of the younger players coming through the club"
