Chesham United Man of the Match: Toby Little

Chesham emerged with a point from a difficult afternoon. Against a Banbury side who played much better than their league position might suggest, Chesham were forced to field a makeshift defence following an early injury to Alex Brown, came back strongly in the second half but still owed their point to a remarkable miss in stoppage time by the home side.

There was only one change to the starting line-up, George Fenton replacing the injured Daniel Brathwaite in the centre of defence. The game started with a strong wind in Banbury’s favour and the home side were soon on the attack, Jordan Green firing in an early shot that Shane Gore blocked. Soon afterwards Alex Brown was limping and was forced to go off, leaving Toby Little to play in the unaccustomed position of central defender while Simon Thomas took over as captain. Chesham were still regrouping and had to be grateful that Darius Browne could only plant a free header straight at Shane Gore. However two minutes later Jordan Green gave Banbury the lead with a dipping shot from 25 yards into the top corner, giving Shane Gore no chance. Chesham threatened for the first time when Dave Pearce ran down the right and shot straight at home keeper Leigh Bedwell, then Ryan Blake ran in behind the home defence to get on the end of Toby Little’s through ball but Bedwell came out to block. At the other end Tom Ryan headed a Duran Martin corner against the bar, but Chesham were starting to come more into the game. Dave Pearce took a short corner to Connor Wood who found Ryan Blake, but his shot on the turn was straight at Bedwell. Dave Pearce then seized on an error by Tom Ryan and ran on into the area but again shot too close to the home keeper.

Early in the second half Bedwell fumbled a long shot from Luke Allen and the ball was scrambled clear, then from another Banbury corner Joel Meade challenged for the ball and Tom Ryan headed over. However Chesham pushed Connor Wood forward and left three at the back and started to take the upper hand. Ryan Blake’s long-range effort was tipped over by Bedwell, then Nathan Poulton tried to get on the end of Mark Bell’s pull-back and the ball dropped to Dave Pearce who dragged his shot wide from the edge of the area. Ten minutes from time Chesham equalised when the linesman flagged for a foul off the ball, Toby Little took the kick from the right touchline and the ball flew in at the far post after Ryan Blake failed to connect with a diving header. Banbury came back and Tom Ryan headed in Ben Whitehead’s free kick but was clearly offside. In the first minute of stoppage time Chesham had a real let-off when the defence misjudged a long ball over the top, Leam Howards was clean through and rounded Shane Gore but took too long and Ashley Smith was able to get back and save the day.
