Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Darren Purse

Chesham made it six wins in a row with this narrow success over an in-form Corby side. All three goals came in the first half, and while the visitors put pressure on Chesham in the second half they rarely looked like scoring.

The starting line-up was unchanged from Tuesday’s win at Weymouth, Daniel Brathwaite returning as a substitute. Chesham took an early lead when Drew Roberts found John Kyriacou overlapping on the right, and Kyriacou pulled the ball back for Chris Dillon to net from close range. There was little action at either end until Corby equalised on 22 minutes, Claudio Hoban finding the top corner of the net with a 25-yard drive. Five minutes later Drew Roberts found Dave Fotheringham who shot wide of the near post. However in the next minute a through ball from Toby Little bounced off the back of Chris Dillon into the path of Drew Roberts, who shot into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards. Shortly afterwards Roberts beat two defenders on the right and set up a shooting chance only to fire straight at keeper Paul Walker. Corby came close once in the remainder of the half, when Cleveland Taylor played the ball in from the left and Greg Mills’ shot was deflected wide of the near post.

Early in the second half Claudio Hoban got on the end of a bouncing ball in the Chesham area but lifted the ball over the bar, then at the other end John Kyriacou crossed onto the head of Chris Dillon who could only glance the ball wide. Corby took control of the game after that but Chesham’s defence looked solid and Shane Gore was rarely tested. Midway through the half Gore tipped over a long cross from Cleveland Taylor, and from the resulting corner Tommy Wright’s header came off a Chesham head and went over. Chesham broke away and Drew Roberts brought down a Darren Purse through ball but Nathan Stanton got in a saving tackle. At the other end a Taylor free kick was collected by Shane Gore who collided with a team-mate and dropped the ball but Chris Carruthers’ shot was just wide, then another Taylor free kick was cleared by Laurie Stewart just wide of the near post. However Corby failed to mount a late charge and only threatened once more, when sub Aman Verma’s shot was deflected wide.
