Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Chris Dillon

Chesham cruised to a comfortable win over mid-table Banbury. Chesham were so superior in the first half that another 8-0 win looked possible, but understandably the team eased off in the second half and contented themselves with just one further goal.

Both the starting line-up and the bench were unchanged. With the wind at their backs Chesham went on the attack from the kick-off, and in the third minute home keeper Kwame Fordah tipped away a shot from James Potton. From the resulting corner taken by Bruce Wilson, Daniel Brathwaite’s header was tipped over by Fordah. In the next minute Fordah made his third fine save to turn away a shot from Drew Roberts on the right. The pressure was bound to lead to a goal and it came in the thirteenth minute, when Dave Fotheringham’s cross was headed on by Drew Roberts and Chris Dillon rose to head in. Three minutes later Dave Fotheringham set up James Potton who shot across goal. Chesham continued to dominate and just before the half-hour mark Chris Dillon ran on to James Potton’s through ball, and shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the area to make it 2-0. Four minutes later Drew Roberts shot from the right and the ball was blocked by Tom Ryan at the expense of a corner, which came through to Laurie Stewart who was unable to turn the ball goalwards. However on 35 minutes Chris Dillon laid the ball into the path of Drew Roberts who shot just inside the near post to make it 3-0. With Banbury posing no threat Chesham went after further goals, Drew Roberts having another shot blocked by Ryan, then Roberts sent Chris Dillon clear to shoot over the bar.

Chesham eased off after the interval and on 55 minutes Banbury had their first effort on goal, Ishmael Thomas heading over from Kyal McNulty’s long cross. Shortly before the hour mark Drew Roberts seized on an underhit back-pass but Fordah dived to turn away the resulting shot. The only controversial moment in the game came on the hour, when Wayne Blossom appeared to stamp on Chris Dillon but the officials missed the incident. Midway through the half James Potton chested down Bruce Wilson’s pass and shot but Fordah again saved. On 73 minutes Banbury won their first corner but to no avail. Late in the game Chesham began to pressurise again, Stephan Hamilton setting up Toby Little for a right-foot shot that Fordah again turned away. Five minutes from time Drew Roberts chested down John Kyriacou’s pass but his shot was blocked, and the ball fell to Toby Little whose shot hit the post with only Fordah to beat. However three minutes later Chesham broke from midfield, and Little set up Drew Roberts who shot past the advancing keeper for Chesham’s fourth.
