Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Darren Purse

With most of their promotion rivals not playing, Chesham picked the wrong time to have a real off day. Hitchin had not beaten Chesham in 20 meetings going back to 1995, but were able to come away with the points without keeper Tahj Bell having to make a single noteworthy save.

There was just one change to the team, Steve Wales coming in and Toby Little switching to left back in place of Daniel Brathwaite. Early in the game Toby Little’s cross was caught by the wind and sailed just over the bar, then Steve Wales found Drew Roberts on the right and Roberts crossed to Chris Dillon who could not direct his header on target. On the quarter-hour Hitchin threatened for the first time, when a long ball held up in the wind and Kim Forsythe’s shot was saved by Shane Gore and Callum Donnelly’s follow-up was cleared off the line by Darren Purse. Three minutes later Hitchin took the lead when Callum Donnelly took a corner from the right, Sam Barker missed his kick and the ball came through to Mark Lambert who stuck out a foot and diverted the ball into his own net. The lead was to last only twelve minutes, as a long clearance from Shane Gore was helped on into the path of Bruce Wilson who scored with a right-foot shot in off the far post. Hitchin came close again when the defence misjudged the bounce of the ball and Garry Jones’ snap shot forced Shane Gore to dive to his right to save.

Early in the second half Hitchin had more possession but little threat, but shortly before the hour mark Lewis Rolfe broke forward and set up Callum Donnelly whose 25-yard effort dipped just under the bar and into the net. Chesham came close when Bruce Wilson’s corner came to Chris Dillon at the far post and his effort was blocked close to the line, but Chesham were well below their best and rarely looked like forcing an equaliser. Hitchin again came close when Shane Gore collected a cross but collided with Darren Purse, and the ball dropped to Sam Barker whose effort was deflected onto the top of the bar. Late in the game Steve Wales crossed to Chris Dillon at the near post but he could only knock the ball over the bar. In stoppage time Darren Purse headed a Bruce Wilson free kick across goal and the ball came off a defender for a corner, Toby Little’s 30-yard free kick was just wide, then the last chance came when Stephan Hamilton’s low cross dropped to James Potton whose hurried shot flew just wide.
