Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Chesham lost ground at the top after sliding to their fourth defeat in six games. Early in the second half Chesham took the lead and looked in control of the game, but conceded a poor goal to allow Biggleswade to equalise and an even worse one to give them a winner.

Daniel Brathwaite came back after injury to replace Stephan Hamilton on the bench, but otherwise Chesham were unchanged. Chesham made a bright start and Toby Little had a shot deflected over in the second minute. At the other end Shane Gore had to make a fine reaction save to keep out a free kick from Lee Allinson, but Chesham had the better of the early stages. On the quarter-hour Steve Wales’ free kick came to Laurie Stewart at the far post but his effort was scrambled away, then James Potton seized on a misplaced pass and squared from the left to Drew Roberts who was denied by a desperate late tackle. However Biggleswade took the lead after 22 minutes when a looping shot from Lee Smith came back off the bar, Shane Gore saved the follow-up effort but the ball fell to Brett Donnelly who netted from close range. Three minutes later an attempted clearance from Toby Little was seized on by Evan Key whose looping effort hit the far post and bounced out. However Chesham regrouped and James Potton’s forward ball fell to Chris Dillon whose shot was smartly saved by home keeper Ian Brown. On 33 minutes James Potton’s ball found Drew Roberts whose cross was cleared at the expense of a corner, which was taken short to John Kyriacou and his cross to the near post was turned in by James Potton for the equaliser. As half-time approached James Potton pulled the ball back and Dave Fotheringham shot over from the edge of the area, then in stoppage time Potton set up Drew Roberts but Brown rushed from his goal to block the resulting shot.

Chesham continued to push forward at the start of the second half and took the lead after 49 minutes with a fine solo effort from James Potton, who ran into the area from wide on the left and shot across the keeper and inside the far post. From another Potton cross Chris Dillon laid the ball back to Drew Roberts whose first-time effort flew just wide. At this stage Chesham were in control of the game, but on 54 minutes the defence failed to deal with a routine ball into the area from Lee Reed and Steve Gentle pounced to equalise. Chesham continued on the attack and a Potton header from Toby Little’s corner was held by Brown at the second attempt. However on 68 minutes Lee Allinson floated a free kick into the Chesham area and Evan Key was left totally unmarked to head in at the far post. Chesham were now forced to come forward which they did with greater urgency, but the home side were full of determination and occasionally looked dangerous on the break. Chesham’s best moment came on 78 minutes when Potton and John Kyriacou exchanged passes down the right, and Kyriacou attempted to catch out Brown at his near post but the keeper pushed the ball away. Chesham became more desperate as the game went on, but the home defence looked solid and saw out the game without too many alarms.
