Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

A burst of three goals in five minutes meant that this game was over as a contest before the end of the first quarter. After taking such an early lead Chesham eased off, but never looked like conceding the advantage against a Frome side who have still not won at home this season.

The only change to the starting line-up saw Drew Roberts return after suspension in place of Inih Effiong. There was a strong wind which was in Frome’s favour in the first half, but the conditions did not really help either side. Chesham made the better start but Frome had the first effort on goal after 14 minutes, a curling effort from Matt Smith that flew just past the far post. However in the next minute James Potton won possession on the touchline on the Chesham right, and ran into the penalty area to curl a shot into the net inside the far post. Three minutes later Potton received Drew Roberts’ lay-off and scored with a dipping shot that keeper Darren Chitty could only help into the roof of the net. Two minutes later Potton turned provider, with a through ball which sent Steve Wales clear to lift over the advancing keeper to make it 3-0. Eight minutes later Chris Dillon won the ball in the area and had his back to goal when his ankles were clipped by Matt Cowler. Dillon took the penalty himself but his effort bounced away off the legs of Chitty, Chesham’s sixth penalty miss of the season. In the next minute Toby Little’s corner came to Chris Dillon who could only lift the ball over the bar, then Drew Roberts controlled a Scott Thomas through ball and shot but Chitty saved. Chesham were looking comfortable but shortly before half-time they gave the ball away in the centre circle, and Matt Smith sent Ben Wood clear to shoot past the advancing Shane Gore to reduce the arrears.

The opening stages of the second half were quiet, until on 58 minutes Ben Wood broke away down the left and shot, Shane Gore parried but Rhys Baggridge could not turn in the loose ball. At the other end a quick free kick from Toby Little found James Potton whose shot beat Chitty but was cleared by Ryan Elliott. After 65 minutes Rhys Baggridge had a free header from an Aaron Ledgister corner but headed wide, which was the home side’s last chance. Four minutes later a good move down the left ended with Drew Roberts setting up James Potton who shot just over, then Drew Roberts cut in from the left and shot for the far corner but Chitty made a fine save to turn the ball behind. After 78 minutes Roberts blocked a clearance from Jack Metcalf, ran on to the loose ball and slotted past Chitty for Chesham’s fourth. Chesham could have added to their tally in stoppage time when debutant Stephan Hamilton set up Drew Roberts who shot over, then Roberts crossed from the right to the unmarked Inih Effiong who headed over.
