Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Potton

Chesham went out of the Red Insure Cup to old rivals Aylesbury. It was clear from the home team’s celebrations that this match meant much more to them than Chesham, most of whose followers showed little disappointment at going out of a competition that was lowest on their list of priorities.

Scott Thomas and Chris Dillon missed the match through injury, and Shane Gore, Danny Gordon and Steve Wales were rested, although in Shane Gore’s case not for long. In the second minute Danny Jones’ free kick was headed goalwards by Keith Williams and the ball went out for a corner, but Chesham’s players immediately called for treatment for James Beasant who was carried off with a dislocated shoulder. On 13 minutes the home side took a surprise lead when Laurie Stewart’s backward header was seized on by Zack Reynolds, who shot across Shane Gore into the far corner of the net. Two minutes later James Potton ran at the home defence and was manhandled by the home defence for a clear penalty, but keeper Alex Tokarczyk dived to keep out Drew Roberts’ kick. Inih Effiong headed over from a Toby Little cross, while at the other end a snap shot by Reynolds was parried by Shane Gore. Chesham then went on to control the rest of the half, but without the urgency of a league game. After 35 minutes Toby Little broke forward but his right-foot shot was deflected behind, then James Potton pulled the ball back from the left and Keith Williams knocked the ball just wide of his own goal. However on 45 minutes Drew Roberts pulled the ball back from the left and this time Williams ran the ball into his own net at the near post.

The game turned nine minutes into the second half, when Mark Lambert was just beaten to the ball by Dan Petrucci and brought Petrucci down to earn a straight red card. Still Chesham pushed forward and James Potton’s shot was deflected behind, then Bruce Wilson’s corner ran loose in the box and Drew Roberts hit the bar from eight yards out. Aylesbury began to put the Chesham defence under pressure for the first time, but just after the hour mark Chesham broke away and Drew Roberts set up James Potton but Tokarczyk dived at Potton’s feet to block. Danny Jones ran down the home right and squared to Dan Petrucci but Shane Gore blocked, then at the other end Tokarczyk parried a fierce drive from Toby Little. Aylesbury then missed a glorious chance when Petrucci broke clear and squared to Stacey Field, who just had to tap the ball in but took too long and Laurie Stewart got back to clear. However the resulting corner was headed in by Ben Baines to restore the home side’s lead. In the later stages Inih Effiong sent Steve Wales clear to side-foot wide with only the keeper to beat, then Alex Brown headed wide from a Bruce Wilson cross, Danny Gordon collected and crossed back in to Brown who again headed wide. However in the last minute of normal time a cross from the left was turned back in from the right by Bruce Wilson and Steve Wales equalised from close range. In stoppage time Inih Effiong drove across goal, then at the other end Ben Baines had a shot deflected behind, and Chesham cleared the resulting corner and had 4v2 but Drew Roberts’ through ball was intercepted. There is no extra time in this competition any more so both sides went to penalties. Chesham took an early advantage when Paul Edgeworth’s penalty came back off the bar and Liam Smyth nearly did the same but the ball bounced down and in. The scores were level after Inih Effiong’s effort was saved, then Shane Gore nearly kept out Ben Baines’ kick but the ball rolled under his body and over the line. The shoot-out ended when Bruce Wilson’s kick was saved by Tokarczyk.
