Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: James Beasant

Normally the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup isn’t a competition that many people get worked up about, but you would not have guessed it from this game in which Chesham claimed a noteworthy victory over a strong MK Dons team. Chesham were more than a match for the opposition in the first half but as the game went on the visitors began to take command. However Chesham turned the game on its head by scoring in the opening seconds of extra time.

There were six changes to the starting line-up, mainly as a result of squad rotation. Chesham started the game strongly and in the ninth minute Dave Fotheringham flashed a 30-yard shot just wide after a corner was cleared. Three minutes later a Toby Little free kick was punched out by keeper Ian McLoughlin and Inih Effiong’s shot was cleared off the line. The remainder of the half was more even and Chesham only had one more chance, when a neat passing move set up Inih Effiong whose shot from the left just missed the far post. However MK Dons had the best effort of the half, when George Baldock squared to Georgio Rasulo whose shot was superbly tipped over by James Beasant.

Early in the second half James Potton broke through and tried to bend the ball into the corner of the net but McLoughlin dived to his right to save. Two minutes later Dons defender Tom Flanagan drove into the Chesham penalty area and was sandwiched between Scott Thomas and Inih Effiong, and Izale McLeod drove in the resulting penalty. However the lead lasted only four minutes as Inih Effiong intercepted a back-pass by Ben Tilney and slipped the ball past McLoughlin. Three minutes later Effiong was clean through on goal only to be brought down by Brendan Galloway, who was extremely fortunate to escape with only a yellow card. Toby Little took the resulting free kick which McLoughlin dived to tip away. However the remainder of the game was dominated by the visitors. Izale McLeod twisted and turned on the left before shooting and the ball was deflected just past the far post, then a loose ball ran to Will Summerfield who shot just over. A long ball from Harry Hickford ran under the foot of Dave Fotheringham to let McLeod through but Beasant saved well, then a free kick from Jason Banton was just over the bar. Six minutes from time Georgio Rasulo’s through pass sent Kabongo Tshimonga clear but Beasant made a great save low to his right. The last action of normal time came when George Baldock’s free kick bounced off the defensive wall to Rasulo who shot over from close range.

The turning point of the game came in the second minute of extra time. Steve Wales went on a typical storming run down the right and set up Inih Effiong, who controlled and slammed the ball into the roof of the net from fifteen yards. The visitors never threatened again and the rest of the first period of extra time passed off without incident. In the opening seconds of the second period a Scott Thomas through pass eluded the Dons defence and Toby Little ran through to lob into the net to seal the win, after which both sides played out time.
