Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Scott Thomas

Chesham secured their seventh straight win with another fine performance. After an uncertain opening Chesham were soon into their stride and had the points wrapped up early in the second half.

With Mark Lambert still ruled out by injury, Chesham’s starting line-up and bench were unchanged. Steve Wales made his 200th appearance for the club and James Potton his 150th. The visitors made the better start and Chesham took a few minutes to get going. However on 13 minutes Drew Roberts had a shot deflected behind, then Steve Wales set up Daniel Brathwaite who curled a shot past the far post. After 18 minutes Steve Wales took a short corner, returned the ball to James Potton and Potton’s pull-back was hit first-time into the net by Drew Roberts. By now Chesham’s passing game was back in evidence and visiting keeper Sam Hornby was forced to save from Steve Wales and Drew Roberts. On 25 minutes a fine pass from Daniel Brathwaite sent Chris Dillon clear but a combination of goalkeeper and defender kept him out. However on 29 minutes a fine move ended with James Potton’s through ball setting up Chris Dillon who stroked the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0. Towards half-time another neat move set up Drew Roberts whose shot was deflected over, then a Chesham corner was only partly cleared and James Potton pulled the ball back to Drew Roberts who shot over.

Early in the second half James Potton set up Chris Dillon whose shot was blocked, then Redditch lost Jermaine Clarke who fell awkwardly and had to be carried off. On 56 minutes a fine through ball from Bruce Wilson found James Potton, who controlled and shot into the far corner of the net from the edge of the area. Two minutes later Redditch threatened for the first time, when a corner was only partly cleared and Shane Gore dived to his left to keep out Jermaine Hylton’s shot. Chesham were still passing the ball well but without the same urgency, and Drew Roberts shot across goal from the right and Chris Dillon curled a shot just wide. Twelve minutes from time Chesham conceded their first goal in seven games, when Edwin Ahenkorah burst into the penalty area from the left and was brought down by Laurie Stewart, Harvey Headley tucking away the penalty. Shortly afterwards Redditch player-manager Liam McDonald was then sent from the dugout for foul and abusive language. Chesham were then awarded a penalty when Joel Caines stuck out an arm to block a Steve Wales cross, but the referee then changed his mind and gave a free kick just outside the area although the offence seemed to be inside. Late in the game Chris Dillon headed goalwards from a Steve Wales free kick but Hornby made a fine reaction save, then at the other end Ashley Sammons shot over the bar from outside the area.
