Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Steve Wales

Chesham blitzed St Neots with an almost faultless performance. The home team may be near the foot of the table but have improved thanks to some recent signings, but they could not live with Chesham on this form. Apart from a sixth consecutive clean sheet, the most impressive aspect of Chesham’s performance was the quality of the goals.

Mark Lambert was kept out by the dead leg suffered at Biggleswade on Saturday, so Laurie Stewart returned to the side. Chesham went on the attack from the start but failed to carve out any openings early on, and after 12 minutes St Neots were awarded a free kick which Lewis Hilliard lifted over the bar. However Chesham took the lead on 16 minutes when Steve Wales picked up the ball on the left and curled a superb shot into the far top corner of the net. Chesham were well into their stride and a low cross from John Kyriacou was just too far ahead of Chris Dillon, then Steve Wales crossed from the left to James Potton who headed back across goal but wide of the near post. On 25 minutes Daniel Brathwaite intercepted the ball inside the home half and sent a perfect through ball to Chris Dillon, who controlled and shot low into the corner of the net from 30 yards to make it 2-0. On 37 minutes Steve Wales, who had switched to the right, drove down the touchline and sent in a perfect low cross for James Potton to sweep into the net from ten yards. Still Chesham were looking for more goals, and John Kyriacou crossed to James Potton whose header came off a defender for a corner.

Four minutes into the second half Drew Roberts took a leaf out of Steve Wales’ book with a fine curling shot from wide on the left into the far top corner to make it 4-0. With the points in the bag Chesham eased off and the home side started to come into the game, but still Chesham looked more likely to score. On 64 minutes a free kick from Drew Roberts beat home keeper Niall Conroy but flew just wide, then Steve Wales’ pull-back was dummied by Drew Roberts and James Potton shot over. On 81 minutes St Neots had their best moment of the game when Ben Ford’s shot forced Shane Gore to dive to his left to turn the ball behind. However Chesham were to have the last word with a fifth goal on 87 minutes. Drew Roberts found space on the left and played the ball back into the path of Toby Little, whose low ball across the area was turned into the net by James Potton. There was still time for Inih Effiong to cut in from the left and fire across goal but just wide of the far post.
