Waitrose Man of the Match in association with the Bucks Examiner: Chris Watters

If ever a team threw away three points it was Chesham in this game. Midway through the second half Chesham, having conceded a poor opening goal, were 2-1 up against ten men and totally in control of the game. However Chesham’s defence slipped up twice in a couple of minutes to allow Arlesey to pinch the points.

Bruce Wilson was unavailable because of work commitments so Chris Watters came in to the starting line-up. Early on Chris Watters set up James Potton whose shot was deflected for a corner, but Chesham had a real let-off in the ninth minute when Jonny MacNamara beat Glenn Williamson to the ball but fired over an open goal. Chesham were enjoying the majority of possession, but after 18 minutes Glenn Williamson punched out a MacNamara cross to Barry Hayles who headed the ball downwards and it bounced up and over the bar. Chesham came back with Potton setting up Chris Watters for an angled drive that keeper Nathan Abbey turned away. After 29 minutes the ball went out of play as Chesham pushed forward and the referee immediately showed a red card to James Hatch, apparently for kicking out at Steve Wales although nobody seemed quite sure. In the next minute James Potton nodded on a Chris Watters cross and Chris Dillon headed just over. However on 38 minutes Glenn Williamson came out to clear, only to collide with Laurie Stewart which allowed Stuart Farrell to walk the ball into the empty net. Things could have got worse three minutes later when Chesham’s defence failed to clear a free kick, and Farrell’s close-range shot was cleared off the line by Mark Lambert.

Chesham went on the attack in the second half and James Potton challenged for a Steve Wales cross only for Christian Tavernier to knock the ball away with his arm. It was a clear penalty but Abbey went to his left to push away Drew Roberts’ kick, only for Steve Wales to cross back in from the right and Chris Dillon equalised at the far post. Shortly afterwards a neat move ended with James Potton setting up Steve Wales for a shot that was deflected behind, then Abbey dived to hold a shot on the turn from Chris Dillon. On 62 minutes Drew Roberts challenged for a Toby Little cross and the ball came to Chris Watters, whose shot was partly parried by Abbey but trickled over the line to give Chesham the lead. Still Chesham pushed forward and on 73 minutes Abbey saved a James Potton shot, and Drew Roberts headed the loose ball goalwards but the keeper somehow leapt up to claw the ball away. At this stage it seemed only a question of how many Chesham would win by, but on 76 minutes a long free kick into the Chesham area was headed down by Ryan Frater and sub Kim Forsythe equalised from twelve yards. Two minutes later Glenn Williamson allowed a speculative shot from David Galbraith to squeeze from his grasp onto the post, from where it rolled along the goal-line and Forsythe bundled it in for the winner. Chesham never recovered their poise but could have equalised in stoppage time when Watters crossed from the left, Chris Dillon challenged for the ball and it ran to sub Inih Effiong who hooked wide of the near post.
