Chesham United Man of the Match: Toby Little

Chesham’s thumping of Weymouth three weeks ago seems a distant memory after their seventh home league defeat of the season. Chesham’s defence conceded twice early on, and eventually regrouped but had to be grateful for some wayward finishing from the visitors to prevent a heavier defeat.

Chesham made two enforced changes following the departure of Danny Talbot and the end of Luke Allen’s loan spell. John Kyriacou returned on loan from St Albans with Ashley Smith switching to midfield alongside Tom McConway. Simon Thomas had signed for St Albans in the week but was loaned back for this game as St Albans did not have a fixture. Arlesey pushed forward from the start and took the lead in the seventh minute, when Martel Powell played the ball through the middle and Jack Vassey ran on to slot past the advancing Shane Gore. Toby Little equalised three minutes later with a free kick from the edge of the area, but Chesham were level for only two minutes. Inih Effiong smashed a shot against the post, collected the rebound and pulled the ball back from the by-line for Vassey to score from close range. Vassey could have completed a hat-trick four minutes later, but hooked the ball over the bar after Chesham failed to clear Luke Abraham’s corner. Midway through the half Chesham came close when Ryan Blake hooked the ball goalwards from the left edge of the penalty area, and the ball came back off the bar with keeper Nick Thompson beaten. The game then went into a quiet phase until 37 minutes, when Dave Pearce crossed from a short corner and Ryan Blake’s header appeared to come off a defender and go over the bar but the referee gave a goal kick. In the next minute Zack Reynolds crossed from the right, Inih Effiong controlled and shot against the post, then as half-time approached Effiong shot wide when through on goal.

Chesham changed formation at half-time, playing three at the back with John Kyriacou and sub Connor Wood pushing forward down the flanks. Just after the hour mark Kyriacou crossed to Simon Thomas who headed straight at Thompson. At the other end Jack Vassey’s cross was partly cleared by Nick Beasant, and the ball dropped to Inih Effiong who shot over with only Shane Gore to beat. Chesham came back and John Kyriacou broke into the area and crossed, Simon Thomas challenged and the ball dropped to Mark Bell who hooked over the bar. Arlesey were content to rely on breakaways but on 72 minutes Effiong held off a challenge and scored Arlesey’s third from inside the area. In the next minute Zack Reynolds could have added a fourth, but Shane Gore managed to get in a block and the ball looped over the bar for a corner. Chesham pushed forward and Ryan Blake squared to Mark Bell whose shot was blocked at the expense of a corner, but Chesham looked like a beaten side. As the game drew to a close Zack Reynolds ran on to his own through ball and would have been clean through on goal, but Jack Vassey played the ball and was flagged offside. In stoppage time Arlesey sub Christian Tavernier crossed low from the right and Vassey blazed over with only Gore to beat.
