Chesham United Man of the Match: Luke Allen

Chesham romped to their biggest win of the season with a burst of scoring either side of half-time. Weymouth came into the game in third place in the table, but had no answer as Chesham took full advantage of the first-half dismissal of Calvin Brooks.

There were three changes to the Chesham team, with on-loan Robbie Cundy making his debut at left back and Toby Little switching to midfield in place of Tom McConway, George Fenton returning in the centre of defence allowing Simon Thomas to revert to striker, and Nick Beasant back in place of the injured Daniel Brathwaite. Chesham got off to the worst possible start when the defence failed to clear a second-minute corner and Jamie Laird scored from the loose ball. Shortly afterwards Weymouth’s Adam Kelly was just off-target with a long-range drive, while at the other end Danny Talbot launched a free kick into the visitors’ penalty area and the ball went just wide off George Fenton. Weymouth came close again when Laird’s diving header flew just over, but Chesham equalised in the next minute when Dave Pearce played the ball forward to Simon Thomas, Neil Martin challenged and the ball ran loose to Luke Allen who shot home. Weymouth came back and George Rigg went close with a header after Chesham’s defence failed to clear a corner, then in the next minute Dean Evans escaped with a warning after a reckless challenge on Luke Allen that could have brought a second yellow card. After 29 minutes Weymouth retook the lead when Chris Shephard’s cross was pushed out by Shane Gore, the ball ran loose and Stewart Yetton scored. Six minutes later Weymouth paid for their indiscipline when Calvin Brooks held on to the ball after conceding a throw, then lashed out at Toby Little who was attempting to take the ball from him, leading inevitably to a red card. Chesham came back into the game when Ashley Smith crossed towards Ryan Blake and the ball was scrambled away, then in stoppage time Toby Little crossed low from the left and Ashley Smith side-footed the ball into the far corner of the net for his first goal for the club.

Two minutes after the restart Ryan Blake crossed low from the right and Simon Thomas netted at the far post to give Chesham the lead for the first time. Luke Allen then broke down the right and set up Dave Pearce who shot across the face of goal, and shortly afterwards a 30-yarder from Luke Allen flew just over. On 57 minutes George Fenton made it 4-2 with a far-post header from a Dave Pearce corner, then two minutes later Ashley Smith fed Simon Thomas on the right, collected the return and shot high into the far corner of the net. Chesham were rampant and Nick Beasant’s shot was cleared from close to the line by Chris McPhee, then Nick Beasant volleyed in a Danny Talbot corner to make it 6-2 just after the hour mark. With the game over as a contest Chesham eased off and Weymouth’s Alec Fiddes had a shot that Shane Gore tipped away, then Stewart Yetton shot wide from McPhee’s pass. Sub Jack Harris’ shot was parried by Matthews in the Weymouth goal, then at the other end McPhee was just over with a shot on the turn. In stoppage time Jack Harris ran down the left and squeezed a shot underneath the body of Matthews to record Chesham’s seventh, and round off a remarkable afternoon.
