Chesham United Man of the Match: Simon Thomas

If ever a match summed up Chesham’s season it was this one. The scoreline suggests that Poole won comfortably to extend their lead at the top, but it would be an understatement to say that nothing went right for an already injury-hit Chesham side.

Chesham were missing both central defenders from Saturday’s game at Frome, Nick Beasant because of a back spasm while new signing Melchi Williamson was unavailable. With Alex Brown and George Fenton still injured, Simon Thomas switched to the centre of defence alongside Daniel Brathwaite. Ryan Blake returned after injury to play up front alongside Jonathan Hippolyte who was making his debut, while Connor Wood was on the bench but was not used as his calf muscle injury needs rest. Chesham made a bright start, and in the seventh minute Ryan Blake found space down the left and shot across goal. Two minutes later Tom McConway suffered a badly-bruised ankle and could not continue, so Mark Bell came on as a substitute. In the meantime Poole threatened for the first time when Ben Close crossed to Luke Burbidge at the far post, but Shane Gore blocked Burbidge’s header. Home keeper Nick Hutchings then took too long to clear from a back-pass and nearly let in Ryan Blake but Hutchings just recovered in time. The home team had only occasionally looked dangerous, but took the lead after 26 minutes with a goal that had Chesham fuming. A heavy challenge left Daniel Brathwaite lying on the ground clutching his ankle, Poole had possession and had every opportunity to put the ball out but carried on, and after a series of passes the unmarked Marvin Brooks scored. Poole came close again when Luke Burbidge’s shot from a Steve Devlin corner was blocked, but otherwise there were few moments of note. However in the second minute of stoppage time Simon Thomas intercepted a crossfield ball under pressure, Shane Gore picked the ball up and was amazed to be penalised for handling a back-pass. After Chesham’s protests were waved away, the resulting free kick was touched short to Steve Devlin who shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0.

Chesham needed a way back into the game in the second half, and Mark Bell nearly provided it after 56 minutes but his shot hit the outside of the post. There was little action at either end until midway through the half, when Shane Gore saved a long-range effort from Steve Devlin and the ball was cleared to safety. Shortly afterwards Ryan Blake set up a chance for Jonathan Hippolyte but Hutchings spread himself to save, then a 25-yard effort from Hippolyte had Hutchings beaten but came back off the post. After 71 minutes Hutchings again took too long to clear, lost possession and hauled down Luke Allen on the edge of the area. Hutchings escaped with a yellow card, then saved Danny Talbot’s free kick and Jonathan Hippolyte’s follow-up. With the game over as a contest Poole scored a third, when Luke Burbidge played a one-two on the edge of the Chesham area and ran on to slot the ball past Shane Gore. In stoppage time Burbidge was again clean through on goal, but took too long and Shane Gore was able to save.
