Chesham United Man of the Match: Luke Allen

A stoppage-time equaliser deprived a patched-up Chesham side of a win at lowly Frome. A poor pitch meant that this game was never going to be a classic, but Chesham looked to have weathered the storm until the 92nd minute.

With Alex Brown ruled out by the injury sustained at Maidenhead in midweek, Melchi Williamson signed on loan from Maidenhead and went straight into the starting line-up alongside fit-again Nick Beasant. Toby Little returned in place of Connor Wood at left-back, while Jonathan Hippolyte, who came on as a substitute for Maidenhead on Tuesday, was on the bench after signing on loan on the morning of the match. The opening stages were fairly even, Chesham having the first noteworthy effort when Luke Allen’s shot deflected off Rhys Baggridge for a corner, then two minutes later Shane Gore tipped over a shot from Lewis Haldane. On 16 minutes Frome had a let-off when Mark Bell crossed low from the right to the unmarked Simon Thomas at the far post, but an awkward bounce meant that the ball looped up off Thomas’ shins and over the bar. With the pitch cutting up there was little flowing football and most of the chances came from set pieces. Frome’s Aaron Rodriguez took a corner which was touched goalwards by Jon Vance but Ashley Smith cleared. However Chesham took the lead in the 24th minute when home keeper Darren Chitty flapped at Mark Bell’s corner and punched the ball straight to Luke Allen, who scored at the second attempt after his first effort was blocked. There were predictable complaints that Chitty had been fouled but these were waved away. Six minutes later Chesham were awarded a free kick on the left corner of the Frome area, Mark Bell went for goal but Chitty stretched to tip the ball away. Frome’s best effort of the half came when Jon Vance’s free kick found Mark Cooper at the far post but Shane Gore punched clear.

Early in the second half Jack Vallis headed over an Aaron Rodriguez corner, then Shane Gore dived to turn away Lewis Haldane’s shot. Frome pressed forward but posed little threat, and midway through the half Lewis Haldane touched on a right-wing cross and Jon Vance netted but was clearly offside. Vallis again headed over from a Rodriguez corner, then at the other end Luke Allen broke clear and side-footed the ball past the advancing Chitty but just past the post. Two minutes later a Danny Talbot corner came to Simon Thomas, who attempted to hit the ball first-time but missed his kick. As the home side pushed forward Chesham looked to attack on the break, and after 88 minutes three players broke away and set up a shooting chance for Danny Talbot who shot straight at Chitty. As the game moved into stoppage time Chesham looked to have done enough, but a hopeful ball forward was missed by Melchi Williamson and Rhys Baggridge shot home from the edge of the area.
