Chesham United Man of the Match: Simon Thomas

Chesham surrendered their hold on the Berks & Bucks Cup, in a game that will be remembered mainly for a second-half collision between Shane Gore and Alex Brown that led to both players being taken off.

With Ryan Blake ruled out by injury and Danny Talbot ineligible, Ryan Towner and Mark Bell came into the side with Simon Thomas starting as a lone striker. Connor Wood and Daniel Brathwaite played a half each, as neither was fully fit. There were few chances at either end in the first half, but home keeper Sam Gray was tested early on by a Luke Allen shot and an angled drive from Mark Bell. At the other end Sam Barratt cut in from the left and shot powerfully but over the bar. After 34 minutes Tashan Adeyinka shot from the left and the ball struck Ashley Smith on the arm, the referee awarding a penalty although Smith had his arms by his side. Danny Green converted to give the home team the lead. Chesham’s best moment of the half came five minutes later, when Luke Allen crossed from the left and Simon Thomas stabbed just wide of the near post.

Five minutes after the restart Tashan Adeyinka outpaced the Chesham defence, rounded Shane Gore and tapped in to make it 2-0. Three minutes later Shane Gore rushed out from his goal to clear but collided with Alex Brown, the ball dropping to Dave Tarpey who had an empty net to aim at from 30 yards but sliced well wide. Both players needed treatment and after a nine-minute delay Brown was stretchered off with a knee injury, and Gore was still groggy so came off as a precaution. Jack Westlake and Reece Cameron came on for their senior debuts, Simon Thomas took over in goal and Daniel Brathwaite switched to the centre of defence with Ashley Smith at left back. The game was effectively over as a contest, although Maidenhead’s Dave Tarpey cut inside and shot just wide of the near post. However Chesham had clearer chances midway through the half, Reece Cameron breaking clear but Gray came out to block, then Dave Pearce shot just wide from 25 yards. At the other end Tarpey broke clear but Jack Westlake got back to clear at the expense of a corner. Towards the end Nick Beasant was limping but had to stay on as Chesham had used all their substitutes, so he hobbled around in midfield while Tom McConway filled in at the centre of defence. In the twelfth minute of stoppage time Simon Thomas kicked away a shot from Tarpey, then did the same when Tarpey got to the loose ball and fired in another shot.
