Chesham United Man of the Match: Ryan Blake

At half-time Chesham looked to be heading for their fourth consecutive defeat, with a depleted side and a two-goal deficit against a Weymouth side looking to go top of the league. Eventually the home team achieved their aim, but had to withstand a Chesham fightback and had to be grateful that a couple of major decisions went their way late on.

With Daniel Brathwaite, Alex Brown and George Fenton all missing and Toby Little only fit enough for a place on the bench, Chesham started with Ashley Smith in the centre of defence and Ryan Towner at right back, while Tom McConway returned in midfield. There was a biting wind blowing straight down the ground which the home team had in their favour in the first half. In spite of this Chesham made the brighter start, Ryan Towner crossing for Simon Thomas to meet at the near post but home keeper Jason Matthews saved, then a hasty clearance by Matthews came to Luke Allen who had an empty goal to aim at from 35 yards but could only clear the bar. Weymouth threatened for the first time when Chris Shephard’s shot was blocked for a corner, then Jamie Reid set up Chris McPhee who shot wide from ten yards with only Shane Gore to beat. However in the next minute Ryan Towner attempted to head a long ball back to Gore, but Adam Kelly nipped in and lobbed over Gore to give the home team the lead. Chesham came close when Dave Pearce’s shot from the edge of the area was parried by Matthews, and the ball was hurriedly cleared away from Simon Thomas. However two minutes later Chesham part cleared after a home attack, only for Chris Shephard to cross back in and Stewart Yetton headed home to make it 2-0.

Early in the second half Adam Kelly crossed to Jamie Reid but Ryan Towner got in a challenge at the near post. After 62 minutes Luke Allen found Ryan Blake on the Chesham right, and Blake shot across Matthews and into the far corner of the net to halve the deficit. The goal breathed new life into Chesham and Weymouth rarely threatened again, but it was not until the last ten minutes that the game came to life. Simon Thomas sent Ryan Blake clear to lift the ball over Matthews but just wide, then Blake nipped between defender and keeper and won the ball only to be tripped by Matthews, who looked extremely relieved when the referee gave nothing. In a rare home breakaway Connor Wood’s challenge denied Shephard, but Chesham launched a final assault. In one scramble in the home area Danny Talbot drove the ball goalwards and a defender blocked it with his hands above his head, which the referee did not seem to think was deliberate.
