Chesham United Man of the Match: Luke Allen

A strong Chesham line-up went down to an embarrassing defeat against a North Greenford side facing relegation from the Southern League.

With Shane Gore still nursing a hamstring injury, Charlie Payne made his senior debut in goal. Nick Beasant returned after suspension in place of Daniel Brathwaite, and Mark Bell came into midfield with Toby Little reverting to left back in place of Connor Wood. Chesham threatened early on when Mark Bell’s cross reached Ryan Blake but the ball bounced off Blake and into the arms of keeper Christian Pal. Dave Pearce had a hot deflected over the bar and Ashley Smith crossed to Simon Thomas who stabbed the ball just past the far post. It was no surprise when Chesham took the lead in the tenth minute, when Ashley Smith set up Luke Allen who turned and scored with a rising shot into the far corner of the net. At this stage it looked as if Chesham would go on to record a comfortable win, but two minutes later Ibrahim Bah’s shot squirmed out of Charlie Payne’s grasp and into the net for a surprise equaliser. Chesham continued to press and Ryan Blake and Mark Bell both fired just off target, but Chesham’s defence was looking uncertain and Tyrelle McLeod-Bentley broke away and shot across the Chesham goal. However Chesham looked likely to score at any moment, Dave Pearce’s corner being tipped over by Pal, Simon Thomas having a header from the resulting corner cleared off the line and Ryan Towner trying his luck with a shot that was deflected behind. However Chesham again conceded against the run of play, Anton Robinson setting up George Moore who controlled and shot low into the corner of the net to give the visitors the lead.

Visiting keeper Christian Pal was injured late in the first half and was replaced in goal by outfield player Bradley Morris. Early in the second half Ryan Blake found the net with a shot on the turn but was flagged offside. Shortly afterwards Dave Pearce cut into the area from the right and was brought down by Romeo Agebane for a penalty which Toby Little converted. Three minutes later Luke Allen’s through ball found Ryan Blake who shot past the advancing keeper to give Chesham the lead at 3-2. Once again Chesham looked in control but on 79 minutes Anton Robinson broke down the visitors’ left, his cross-shot was handled by Ashley Smith and Gaylor Mbunga converted the resulting penalty. Chesham had chances to win it late on, Connor Wood squaring to Ryan Blake who shot wide with only Morris to beat. However as the game seemed to be heading for penalties, Charlie Payne came to collect a mishit cross only to be beaten to the ball by Junior Scott whose header trickled over the line for a surprise winner.
