Chesham United Man of the Match: Toby Little

Chesham maintained their 100% record in 2015 with a deserved win on an eventful day.

The day got off to a difficult start when Luke Allen was ruled unfit, and George Fenton suffered minor injuries in a car accident on the way to the Meadow. With Nathan Poulton and Tom McConway also injured, Andy Leese registered with the league as a player to bring the bench up to three subs, alongside Reece Cameron who is still eligible to play for the youth team. Chesham came close to scoring in the second minute when a corner was taken short, Dave Pearce centred and Toby Little shot just wide of the near post. Chesham had the better of the opening quarter but without troubling the home defence. After 26 minutes Sean Downing crossed and Alex Brown and Nick Beasant combined to clear from Kevin Squire, then from the resulting corner Sean Downing headed over. Chesham came back and Ryan Towner fizzed a 30-yard shot just over after a Toby Little cross was cleared. Downing then attempted to lob the advancing Shane Gore but Nick Beasant got a touch to deflect the ball away. Chesham took the lead after 32 minutes when Ashley Smith crossed from the right, Simon Thomas headed across goal from the far post and Toby Little tapped the ball over the line. Because Little was only a couple of yards out there were predictable cries of offside, mainly from people who seemed to think that they were better placed than the linesman. Three minutes later Ashley Smith set up Dave Pearce who mishit a shot across goal. Three minutes later Bideford equalised when Ben Wood crossed, Kevin Squire miskicked in front of goal but the ball fell to Sean Downing who netted. Two minutes later Downing cut in from the left and shot right-footed but his effort cleared the bar.

Four minutes after the restart Chesham retook the lead, when Nick Beasant headed a Mark Bell corner back across goal and Toby Little shot low into the net. Shane Gore made an acrobatic save to hold a speculative effort from Micky Parcell, but otherwise was rarely troubled. Ryan Blake broke away down the right but his shot was kicked away. On the hour Dave Pearce squared to Toby Little whose shot was saved by keeper Steve Oliver, and Simon Thomas tucked away the loose ball to make it 3-1. Chesham continued to look the more dangerous, and Ryan Blake’s solo run ended with a shot from the edge of the area which flew across goal. With twenty minutes to go the lights went out on one of the floodlight pylons at the end Chesham were defending, but the game carried on. Mark Bell ran to the edge of the home area and the ball came to Ryan Blake whose shot beat Oliver but came back off the post, then at the other end a shot from Danny Tapp deflected behind off Ashley Smith. On 73 minutes Bideford’s Chris McGrath kicked out after a challenge by Ryan Blake, then ran over and pushed his forehead against Blake’s and could have no complaints about the resulting red card, while Blake was booked for the original challenge. Bideford never threatened to get back in the game and Chesham were able to get away without using a substitute. In the final minutes Ryan Blake rounded Oliver but the ball just ran out for a goal kick, then Toby Little ran from his own half into the home area but his final shot was turned behind by Oliver.
