Chesham United Man of the Match: Ryan Blake

This win over relegation-threatened Dorchester took Chesham to within three points of the play-off places, after the last six games have yielded 14 points. However this was far more of a struggle than the Truro game eight days before.

Darren Purse signed for Welling United in the week, and Nathan Poulton and Tom McConway were both injured, so Nick Beasant started in the centre of defence and Mark Bell came into midfield alongside Ryan Towner on his return from a spell at Barnsley. Chesham had a great chance to take the lead in the second minute when Dorchester’s defence misjudged a long kick from Shane Gore and allowed Ryan Blake to break clear, but his shot hit the legs of keeper Shane Murphy. However Dorchester, who had taken only four points away from home all season, took a shock lead three minutes later when a long throw from Chris Dillon was not cleared and Nathan Walker turned to shoot into the corner of the net. Chesham went back on the attack and Dave Pearce’s shot was held by Murphy to his left, then Ryan Blake tried to beat Murphy at his near post but the keeper pushed the ball behind for a corner. Chesham equalised after 23 minutes when Mark Bell took a free kick from wide on the left, and the ball travelled beyond the far post from where Dave Pearce squeezed the ball back into the net from a narrow angle. Chesham were on top for the rest of the first half, and a looping cross from Ashley Smith saw Simon Thomas beat Murphy to the ball and head back across goal but nobody was able to convert. Luke Allen hit a curling shot just over, then Dave Pearce took a corner short to Mark Bell whose left-foot shot was tipped over by Murphy.

Early in the second half Dorchester enjoyed their best spell of the game, and a cross from Dan Smith was not cleared and Nathan Walker stabbed the ball wide from a good position. However just after the hour mark Chesham pushed forward, Toby Little’s ball was helped on by Mark Bell and Ryan Blake shot low into the net to give Chesham the lead. Shortly afterwards Dave Pearce crossed from the left to Luke Allen, who glanced a header wide of the far post. Dorchester came back and a Nathan Walker header was tipped over by Shane Gore, then Jake Smeeton crossed from the left to Walker who headed wide of the near post. However on 81 minutes Ryan Blake battled along the by-line on the left, and squared for Simon Thomas to tap in from close range to make it 3-1. That looked to be enough to secure the three points, but three minutes later Walker got his head to a long right-wing cross by Jamie Oldring and looped a header into the net to halve the deficit. After 89 minutes Nick Beasant tapped the ball back for Shane Gore to take a free kick, only to be shown a second yellow card for apparent time-wasting. However Chesham immediately brought on Alex Brown to shore up the defence, and held on to claim the win.
