Chesham United Man of the Match: Toby Little

Chesham put the disappointment of Saturday’s defeat firmly behind them with this comfortable win over struggling Arlesey. Three goals in six first-half minutes gave Chesham a lead that the home team never looked like pulling back.

With Darren Purse injured and Liam Malone away, Daniel Brathwaite returned after missing eight matches and Tom McConway made his first first-team start in midfield. From the start Chesham carried the greater goal threat, and early on a neat build-up involving Tony Little and Dave Pearce ended with Little side-footing the ball onto the outside of the post. Ryan Blake crossed low from the right and home defender Mark Gallagher stuck out a foot and was relieved to see the ball only hit the side netting. Daniel Brathwaite’s through ball sent Simon Thomas clear down the left but home keeper Nick Thompson came out to block Thomas’ attempted lob. Chesham had a number of other shots on goal which seemed to find Thompson with unerring accuracy. However on 26 minutes Ashley Smith crossed low from the right and Andre Maltay stuck out a foot and deflected the ball past his own keeper to give Chesham the lead. Two minutes later Ryan Blake’s persistence saw him beat a defender on the by-line and cross for Toby Little to net from close range. Four minutes later Blake beat the home offside trap, pushed the ball past the advancing goalkeeper and walked the ball into the empty net. Five minutes from time Simon Thomas had a cross-shot blocked by James Sage, and from the resulting corner Alex Brown netted but was penalised for a foul on the goalkeeper.

In the second minute after the restart Arlesey had their first real effort on goal, Hallelujah Basmel shooting just over. Shane Gore then had to rush to save at the feet of James Hatch, but at the other end Toby Little’s shot hit the bar and Dave Pearce’s effort from the rebound was cleared off the line by Mark Gallagher. Three minutes later Ryan Blake’s run into the area saw him brought down twice, but each time he got up and carried on only for his final shot to be blocked. As Chesham eased off in the final quarter James Hatch’s snap shot was just over, then sub Liam McGovern’s shot was tipped over by Shane Gore. Late in the game Will Summerfield’s free kick was just wide and Hallelujah Basmel shot wide of the near post, but Chesham had long since wrapped up the points.
