Chesham United Man of the Match: Dave Pearce

Chesham went down to their first defeat in eleven league games. After a lacklustre opening Chesham seemed to be back on track as half-time approached, but Ben Herd’s penalty gave the visitors a lead that Chesham rarely looked like pulling back.

Liam Malone was fit again after missing the Hereford game in midweek, so came in for Mark Bell in the only change to the starting line-up. Dunstable made the better start, but former Chesham man Inih Effiong lacked support up front so the main threat came from set pieces. In the fourth minute Tony Burnett flicked a Charlie Henry corner onto the bar, then another Henry corner was cleared as far as Scott Davies whose log-range effort flew just wide. Chesham threatened for the first time when Dave Pearce’s crossfield pass was missed by Ben Herd, which enabled Toby Little to shoot across the face of goal. Charlie Henry then beat two players only to shoot wide from just inside the area, but the visitors took the lead on the half-hour when a long ball forward from Scott Davies was missed by Alex Brown and Inih Effiong stole in to score. However the lead was to last only three minutes, as Simon Thomas and Nathan Poulton attempted to get on the end of a left-wing cross from Ryan Blake and Dave Pearce netted with a low drive. As half-time approached another mistake allowed Dunstable in, when Darren Purse lost the ball to Ben Herd who ran into the area only to be brought down by Alex Brown’s despairing lunge. Herd himself converted the resulting penalty.

Chesham looked tentative in the early stages of the second half and Herd could have scored again early on, chesting down a ball from Steven Gregory only to hook the ball over. Chesham lacked confidence going forward and with a number of passes going astray, they rarely threatened to get back in the game. Dunstable had been content to sit on their lead but ten minutes from time scored a crucial third goal, when an Adam Watkins cross took a deflection and looped up from sub Jamale McKenzie-Lowe to turn in at the far post. Five minutes later a cross from sub Tom McConway was not cleared and Darren Purse’s shot hit Scott Davies who knew little about it, but that was as good as it got for Chesham who went down to their fifth home defeat of the season. In stoppage time sub Ryan Hope broke clear for Dunstable, but took too long and allowed Connor Wood to get back to clear.
